Default Exterior Panel

So I pull into the driveway Friday and there sits my 92 SE with the plastic panel missing from the drivers side rear door! (my eighteen year old had borrowed it). All that was there was the four black brackets. Luckily he went back and got the panel which was unharmed. When I asked him what happened he gave me the "I Dunno, it just flew off".
There are two brackets broken. I will replace them but I noticed there is a small stud broken off back by the rear wheel well. What do I have to do to reattach the panel?
Thanks.

Default Re: Exterior Panel

Previously I wrote:

I don't have the book here with me but my guess is that it'* a mounting point for a corner of the panel where they didn't have room for a full-size clip, and the stud (which I assume was molded on the back of the plastic cladding, not on the door) would go through a hole in the door and be attached on the back side with a PAL nut...
Okay, I finally looked it up in the '93 manual, FWIW, and it shows six clips along the door and one screw (not a stud) at the back, going _outwards_ through the door panel into the back of the plastic piece. For some reason the instructions accompanying the diagram talk about removing two screws, although the diagram itself shows only one. It'* also not clear from the diagram whether they're illustrating an SE or an SSEi, and I forgot to look on my doors while rushing to the train station this morning.

So anyway, what you see as the end of a stud on your panel might actually be a mounting screw with the head broken off. See what the door on the opposite side looks like.

In any event, I think if you've got six good clips holding it on, it should be fine. The screw would be used to prevent the panel from shifting lengthwise on the door, and possibly snagging on clothing or on the edge of the front door.

No, there is no damage to the door, just the two center brackets (black plastic strips with white plastic ends) are broken. By guess is 1. Somebody smacked a door into the panel, 2. Somebody threw a baseball at it, or 3. Somebody doored a dog (do they still do that?)
The 92 SE had a wide panel, unlike SE'* of later years.

Those door panels come off easy, our 95 SSE had one fall off in the car wash.

Um, "doored a dog"? Haven't heard that before here in the midwest. You mean open the door while driving past a dog or whatever? How do you get the dog to stay in the right place? ("Rover! Stay!" "Woof!" *whump*)

Did they stop for gas by any chance? Maybe they got a little too close to the high curb on that island around the gas pumps.

(Oh, yeah, that'* right: 18-year-old son borrowing Dad'* car and actually putting _gas_ in it? Silly me... )

Dunno, it just flew off
My girlfriend took my 86 cutlass 442 out one time and came back and said that to me, handed me a center cap to one my rims. Did you hit a curb? "NO"
As I look at the cap, theres a big gash in it. "That was there right?"

NNNOOOOO!!!! :?

Still to this day, 5 years later, she swears she NEVER hit a curb, just braked hard and she heard it/saw it go flying forward. Still don't buy it. Whatever I guess.
NEVER takes my car again with out me in it. I White knuckle the dash at least once evertime I ride with her. She'* a cutie!

Default Door a dog

I don't know if this still happens like it did back in the '70'*, with all the leash laws and such, but when a dog used to come out to bark and bite at your front tire and chase the car, some guys I knew.....(not me of course) would open their door(usually going about 20mph)...it was kind of like playing pin ball Sorry, I have two beagles and love dogs, like I said, it wasn't me.
