What is it with our trannies???
Is it just OUR trannies that are constantly breaking? or does every other vehicle have these problems? I have yet to see a used bonne in the paper older than 1995 that hasnt had a major rebuild ESPECIALLY the 87 to 91.... Did GM just forget to engineer it correctly? I dont know much about trannies but it seems suspicious that they cant handle even a little bit of abuse...

Ummm, well my old 89 has the same tranny as yours and its way strong, in fact its one of the best ones GM ever made. Most ppl abuse their transmissions, never replace fluids or filters so ya, it gets abused.
10 years trouble free without tranny problems and your lucky. GM has a better tranny then Chrysler and Ford.
I do believe that all the torque that the 3800'* come with...well, we get careless and hammer a bit harder then we should, so that hurts the trans, you got nearly 15 years out of yours....not bad.
My old Bonneville is goin on 16 baby...no problems with that transmission

Your correct in saying these tranny'* are weak because they are, especially when modding a car.
But given the stock engine and light to moderate driving these transmissions with proper scheduled maintence will last for years for most people.

You folks gotta remember, these arent really geared as "performance cars", the SSEi comes with a HD tranny to handle the gobs of power, but like anything, you abuse and it will fail..
Either that or Father Time will getcha :?

280 ft/lb stock torque, 280 ft/lb max tranny. 1 Mod or a factory freak and that thing is destined to go. May not be tomorrow, or next week, but its going to go. 2 things you can do to help delay it. Limited slip dif and a lt weight tq convertor. If my tranny makes it home from BFest, thats my next two mods.

My 90 has 80k on it, and the trans has never been abused. it had a flush at 40k. and it has failed now. this was my grandma'* car, and it was barely ever drivin, and when it was she drove really slow lol....

You've got indentical miles to my car Rogue. Only you have 120 more hp. I can't get over that LSS I drove 2 weeks ago. That IS a factory freak. Its still for sale, but i'm concerned about the tranny. It seemed good and all but the fluid was light brown and it has 127,000 miles on it. How long can these cars be driven with fluid like that. I feel as though i'd get ripped financially w/ that car. However, the last time I saw a speedometer go up like that was in my friends Z06.
