Default Should I switch to synthetic or not?

Ok here'* the deal. My buick has 154K on it and I drive it about 20 miles a day. I currently live in a rural area so it sees lots of highway and town driving. I soon will be moving into town and will only be driving 1.5 miles to work. It will see the highway only when it takes long trips which is about every couple of months or so. I'm worried that not getting my oil up to temp would be bad for the engine eventually. Would it be worth switching to synthetic or not? I currently change my oil about every 3000 miles and I use decent oil and filters when changing.

I would say yes. My opinion would be to use a good full synthetic oil. However it should be mentioned that not all oils are made alike. The best synthetics are Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum. Synthetic is not just synthetic, theres alot more behind it. Also be sure to use a Delco or Purolator PureONE oil filter. Thats very important.

Following these things will ensure that your engine will be protected for an average of 7,500 miles instead of having to do it every 3,000. Its really quite nice.

slightly offtopic, but FYI, IMO, paying the price for royal purple and a k&n is really unnecessary. I've yet to see anyone prove that either of those things are better or rather even nearly justify the costs over the oils and filters that I recommended above.

Gains, if any, are minimal, price is certainly not. Your choice obviously, just a heads up.

Its probably too late for synthetic to do you much good.
Switch to oil changes every three months and dino will do ya

Why are we even discussing this or voting in a poll?

Have you EVER heard of a high-mileage switch story on this Forum? How many topics have reccommended the change at any mileage?

If you want to switch, then switch. You won't have problems.

I think you missed the intent Will, we're not discussing the possible problems that some say you get when switching to synthetic late in life, but rather how best to treat a seldom used Bonnie that will seldom get the oil hot enough to burn off the water and whether switching would be beneficial in this scenario.

It will make no difference whatsoever. Our engines aren't susceptible to any type of oil related issues unless neglected.

Run what you prefer.

so your saying I won't have any more problems with sludge buildup with the dino oil as apposed to the synthetic oil. I thought that Mobil would be better considering the less likely chance of sludge buildup since the vehicle won't be getting up to full temp.
