Well the bent rim wouldn't explain the knocking....cv joint is where I'd be looking. I get the same thing on mine. It started when I turned to the right but now its left or right I get a thumping like I'm driving over cracks in the road. Similar? Does it click when parked and turning the wheel? - Ball joint

Staying true to my love of the link I found one that should help you out:
http://www.artsautomotive.com/axle_story.htm

The last paragraph is of the most interest to your situation.

Wow, awesome link Doc! This may be TechInfo worthy!

If the outer CV joint is damaged the usual symptom is a clicking noise around corners. If the inner CV joint is damaged the car may vibrate or knock during acceleration. To test for CV joint noise we drive the car in circles in both directions with the gas and brake applied at the same time. This applies a load to the joint which usually makes the joint click louder if it'* bad. If you're going to try this, be very careful because no drivers around you will be expecting you to make a U-turn to the right! If you hear axle noise when turning to the right, then it'* most likely the left outer joint that'* bad. If you hear noise when turning to the left, then it'* most likely the right outer joint that'* bad. If you hear axle noise in both directions it could be that both outer CV joints are bad, or it could be one outer CV joint that is very bad. You'll have to try to listen to hear which side it sounds like the noise is coming from. If a CV joint makes noise then it'* too late for a reboot --the axle must be replaced. A rebuilt axle is cheaper than a new CV joint so we normally replace the whole axle.

Sweet!! That clinches that I need a ball joint, since it rules out CV, too...
