Thermostat question
I have heard it mentioned that by going to a 180 degree thermostat would prolong the life of the engine and would not alter the cars performance. I have not run my new engine (rebuilt) at this time and want to make sure of this statement before putting my car into service. Can anyone give me some input on this topic? Thanks, John
Edit: 1995 SE, auto trans, air, power windows, power brakes - I am not sure what other information to list here to determine about going with a 180 degree thermostat. I am burning reg gas in the car and will check if I should go with a higher octane. Haven' t heard anything about what grade of gas I should be running. My engine is not a super charged engine. Hope this helps. Thanks

It would actually help to know the year and trim level of your vehicle. It makes a difference when answering this question.

It helps if you run an L36, the Series II NA engine, since the upper intake manifold then has less of a chance of warping and having coolant leak mix with oil. For other engines, it'* not as important. It should help a teeny bit so that your car makes maybe a fraction of a horsepower more, but that'* about it, as far as I know.

it also is good for your tranny, because heat is the enemy of transmissions, and (i think) your transmission is cooled by the coolant in the radiator. so colder coolant will cool your transmission more. that'* about the only reason i have a 180 still in my car.
