so would it be smarter to leave my original seal with a silicon sealed 1/2" gap, or brand new from GMPD (which i thought was a seamless), or a used one from that 97 i was looking at

New from GMPD, without question. Mine is holding up great after two years. There is NO SUCH THING as a seamless seal.
