I mean, I'm grateful to get them in PDF form at all, of course, but the way these were done is really inefficient. They're basically scanned, rasterized images rather than actual PDF _documents_ and have none of the really useful PDF features (indexing, hyperlinks, etc.) that could easily be added. In this current form they're essentially no better than color faxes.
They were not generated from the original document files; they appear to be scans that were processed via Acrobat Capture, with PDF generated via an older version of the Adobe PDF Library. This is better than nothing at all, but could be a lot better than this. We do contracted sales, distribution and Tech Support of the Adobe PDF Library as our business, so in a way it'* kind of painful for me to look at this and see how close this comes to being a useful solution, if they'd only done a proper conversion in the first place.
What'* the story behind these things, anyway? Were they done by some branch of GM, or by a third-party outfit?

I had nothing to do with the creation of these files, but I noticed that the bookmarks and thumbnails don't show up when viewing the pdf file (1993, for example) with the free Acrobat Reader product, but they do show up and work well when using the full Acrobat product (purchased).
Using either Acrobat product, though, you can still search for text strings, and in my experience when using the Pontiac manuals, this alone would be a very nice feature to have available because my biggest frustration when using the OEM service manuals is that the indices are minimal at best, and it'* hard to find things, e.g. the IAC valve, without hunting throughout the books.
I've actually contemplated scanning all pages and converting them to pdf images with text and creating a linked table of contents and a thorough index...but that'd take a long time, and the easiest way to do it would be to first tear each page out of the manuals...
Somebody somewhere must have already done this anyway...
