3800 drivetrain question, please help!!
Ok heres the story, my fiances families 1997 Regal LS (3800 series II N/A) has been in and out of the shop several time. The dealership it goes to is a joke. The couldn't even fix the turn signals the first attempt, so they have been driving it without signals for a while. They also replaced the transmission after it had some consederable surging problems. Well when they got it back from the transmission job it started making noise. I picked it up from the shop that day and I noticed right off when I accelerated from a dead stop I could hear what sounds like a gear wine. It goes away after the car hits 10 MPH. But you hear it every time you acellerate from a dead stop. This week the Regal went back into the shop, runs like crap. They told my mother in law that its the power steering pump. Now why would a power steering pump make a gear wine after a transmission job? I drove that car and let me tell you the power steering is 20 times better than mine in the Bonneville. Sounds Fish. I My caravan made the same noise for 5 seconds when you first started it up in very cold weather. A very distinctive gear wine. I'm guessing that the rebuilt transmission was is at fault. Sounds like the gears are not getting enough oil when you start out. Let me know what you think. I really need your help. These are good people getting ripped off here. Thanks in advance,
Dan

I forgot to mention they said its surging again. This surging happens when you are accellerating, the RPM jump up and down betweet 1500 and 2000 rpms usually, at least when I drove it. I think they did check the fluids. Also it has only been maybe 5 months since the tranny was replaced

I was even thinking oxygen sensor as far as the surging is concerned. As for the gear wine thats whats bugging me. The dealership said its the power steering pump, I'm not buying that load of BS

That sucks, I hate incompitant dealers. To me does sound like gear whine. Check the fluids, maybe they didn't change the tranny filter either.
As for the surging, could be lot'* of things, fuel filter could be clogged, bad/worn spark plug wires/boots, many sensors could also be the culprit.
Are there any other GM dealers that the regal could go to? It took me 3 dealers to find a good Aurora mechanic.
