I'm posting this here because it deals specifically with the GXP I just purchased and the question arrises because my car is a GXP.

Had I bought an SE, SLE or SSEi I probably wouldn't consider getting an extended warranty because I know how to fix many of the things that go wrong on the L36/L67s. However, I bought a N*. I have read here that they are difficult to fix and costly should something go wrong. The key part for me is "should something go wrong". I have read that both the N* and L36/67s are considered reliable but how many of us have had the UIM/LIM problem on the L36? So I am balancing current costs against future costs and risk. I am simply not going to dig into the N* since I know so little about it. I have four months to buy the GM Premier extended warranty. I don't have $1800 just lying around so it would be a considerable expense for me.

Question: Would you buy the extended warranty? Why or why not?

I bought 3 new GM cars in the past decade and bought 100K warranties on all of them. The first was my 95 SSEi and I only used the extended for the traction control module thing in the console that cost $300. I lost money that time.
The second was a 97 Tahoe. At 74K a new air conditioner compressor, then at 77K a new short block! Bad main bearing was knockin' like a SOB. I made money that time.
My next 04 Tahoe has 75K on it now. Absolutely no problems. If something doesn't crap out in the next 25K miles then I lost money on it'* warranty also.
Now I have an 05 GXP with 13K on it. I didn't buy it new so it just has the original factory warranty but I can still buy the extended just like you. I don't really know if I'm going to or not. It'* much easier to finance it with the car than to plop down the cash all at once. I'm curious as what everyone thinks. I didn't help you did I?

I chose to purchase the 2 yr extended warranty when I bought my '03 SSEi w 20k miles last August. It was only $700 and didn't want to deal with any big costs for the next 2 yrs. Good thing, because the right front window regulator was making alot of noise (which I didn't really notice during the test drive). The dealer said that would have been about a $500 repair if not for the warranty. The more I read on this site, the more I learn about potential issues and get them repaired under warranty before I have to pay.

As much as I'm not generally a fan of extended warranties, I sure would. In fact I did purchase it for my '04 GXP. $1,800.00 is a lot of money and like any other "insurance" you may never get out what you put in.

I recently had a problem with my transmission. Although it was covered under the original factory warranty it would have cost in excess of $4,000.00 (CDN) if I needed to pay it myself. This wasn't even a new transmission, only a repair. By the end there was 13.6 hours of labour to pull, repair and re-install the transmission. These are often NOT easy cars to work on and labour times are high as a result.

I purchased the extended warranty for my '02 SE when I had it and broke about even. The intermediate steering shaft was replaced, the ignition lock cylinder, the fan blower motor, intake manifold gaskets and a couple of other items.

The systems can be complex and it takes relatively little time and few parts to end up with a pretty hefty repair bill.

As much as I've loved both my '02 SE and '04 GXP, neither have been exactly trouble free.

I purchased the extended warranty when I got mine and used it to take care of the front strut replacement,since the suspension was one of the things it covered and also had the SC gaskets replaced at the same time.

The total bill came out to just a little over 1700 bucks and it only cost me 100 out of pocket

It'* still piece of mind even if you don't need it. It is a great thing to have if you do have a major repair pop up

Yeah, $1,800.00 seems low. The one for my GXP was $2,435.00 CDN. I'm thinking that when two bonnies quoted the price it wasn't based on the top level warranty package. I was given the option of 3 or 4 different levels / time periods.

My vote is yes. In the long run it'* not that much money to have good piece of mind knowing that any repairs (other than maintenance issues) will be taken care of...

I'd do it if I was in your position.
