i have a tap and dont know what it is.
I have a 2003 2500hd with the 6.0l engine. there is a really fast tapping sounds that i can hear when i am driving. this tap happens around 3000rpms especially when the transmissions switches from 1st to 2nd gear. what could this be?

Is the tapping related to engine speed or road speed (change gears to find out)? If you are driving, shift into neutrat and rev the engine to 3,000 RPM. Do you hear the tapping or not (in neutral)? We need to figure out if this is engine or transmission related. If you think it is coming from the engine, is the noise coming from the top end or the bottom. Take a wooden dowel, hold it to your ear and touch it to each of the rocker covers. Now touch it to the oil pan. Where is the noise the loudest?

yeah it starts around 3000rpms both in neutral and driving down the road. it is definitely louder and easier to hear when going down the road. it sounds like it is coming from bottom and more towards the fire wall. i was thinking it could be lifters but it just seems strangle that all would be making the chattering/ tapping noise at one time.

Condition
Some customers may comment on an engine tick noise. The distinguishing characteristic of this condition is that it likely will have been present since new, and is typically noticed within the first 161-322 km (100-200 mi). The noise may often be diagnosed as a collapsed lifter. Additionally, the noise may be present at cold start and appear to diminish and then return as the engine warms to operating temperature. This noise is different from other noises that may begin to occur at 3219-4828 km (2000-3000 mi).
Cause
The 0-ring seal between the oil pump screen and the oil pump may be cut, causing aeration of the oil.
Correction
Inspect the 0-ring seal and replace as necessary. Use the applicable part number listed below. Refer to the Engine Mechanical sub-section of the appropriate Service Manual.
