Default Under the dash neon Question?

Ok guys another question... I want to add some neon to my car but me being the bling bling type of person I am I opted for the 'el-chepo' wal-mart type of neon. They are supposed to run off the cigarette adaptor but I want to hard wire them with a switch. I know that I got to strip off the wire but what would be a good source of power to run off of... also how do I know what line is what... there is one that is connected to a fuse the other piece seems to be connected to a piece of metal... I'm guessing power and a ground??

Thanks for help guys!

I powered mine off the cigarette lighter, the one for the back seat. If you have one check the cubby between the driver and passenger seats. If you look in there there'* some panels you can remove, take them out and you should see an orange and black wire that powers the lighter. Just hook up the power and grounds, throw a switch on there and VOILA!

I cheated and wired mine up to the marker lights so when the marker lights come on ( when its gettin dark and the sentinal kicks in ) so does the neon.. hee hee.. I don't know where you could find that inside, but will look further into when I get my hands on the electrical schemetics from Tamara'* 95.. but SmellPerv'* way is probably the easiest way too. ( or you can run it from the fuse box )

It'* the brown wire coming off the headlight switch; that'* the external lighting circuit (actually all exterior bulbs _except_ the headlamps). That will go hot even if the sentinel turns the lights on instead of you operating the switch manually.

Don't feel bad about buying Wal-Mart neon; light is light, and it'* supposed to be indirect bounce lighting anyway: if you install it properly, no one will see the hardware.

Thanx acg_ssei.. saved me the trouble of lookin it up.. and I do also agree. I have a plasma tube bought from walmart that lights up my Pontiac logo on my trunk. ( was going to switch to Neon, but got too lazy to redo everything.. so I will wait till it burns out or something )

I think that this is how I want to wire mine up... when I took apart the center cubby thing I saw a bunch of wires taped together... are you saying I want the Orange and Black?? Also, what about the fuse that is in the line now... do I have to hook that up or what? Thanks!

Yes, Orange is the always-hot accessory power lead; Black is the ground. (Note the "always-hot" part; you _will_ be installing a switch to turn the neon off, right?)

If your neon comes with its own fuse, leave it in. There'* no harm in having more than one fuse on the circuit, and if something in the neon goes bad and blows its own fuse, at least you may still have power to the rest of the original circuit. (Note that there'* no _guarantee_ that the neon fuse will blow before the car'* own accessory fuse, but if its rating is something significantly less than 30 amps, it probably will.)

OK, I should have mentioned this before... sorry. Yes I am going to be adding a switch, so thank you for the info on Orange being always hot. The fuse that is there now isn't like a normal car fuse... it is one of those small clear cylindrical fuses that are in car chargers for cell phones, how would I put that in the line? If I can just drop the whole fuse thing all together I would like to, is that possible and just have it rely on the fuse that is already in the line?
