I was just thinking about that. Why stress over all this crap, when you can just drive the speed limit, or just 5 mph above it, and nobody will care. I did 75 in a 45, and nobody cared either.. mind you I was keeping up with traffic, and the cop that drove by was also keeping up with traffic.

Wow, hey justin that is great man, I mean it that is just.. wow good for you. Listen uh.. I dont know if you live in my neck of the woods or not but around here the popo has to meet a quota, and they do meet it. And seeing as everything is hella far away from everything if you want to get there before your next birthday usually you go a little faster than posted, like you were saying but again justin cops do not like speeder'*. They DO pull you over for going 5 over here, I have seen it numerous times and freinds have been pulled over for going 3mph over. Yes 3mph. The whole reason why I posted this thread was to see if there was anything out there that could get me the edge on helping me avoiding helping that cop fill his quota, actually I hope I spelled that right o well...

Ok I just thought I would weigh in on this subject. Radar detectors can be effective, but there is virtually NO scatter from a properly used laser speed detection device. In NY, 90% of all state trooper cars used for speed control have laser guns and there is virtually no way to know if you are coming up onto a cop.

Are you guys driving the same route each day? If you are, it is very easy to know where the cops are going to be. When I was driving 100 miles one way to help my dad out this summer, I knew over 20 places that were hot spots for cops to sit.

Another thing... On that same commute, when I thought about it, driving 80mph on the 60 mile stretch of interstate (speed limit 65mph) would only get me to my parents house 5 minutes sooner than if I were going 72. I'd just leave 5 minutes earlier and not worry about my speed. If I were to drive the entire trip at 10mph over the speed limit, it would only net me 10 minutes total time saved... That 10 minutes is not worth a ticket.

On the "They pull you over for going +5mph". That'* BS and it will get thrown out of EVERY court in the US. Due to federal regulations, all speedometers in US sold vehicles have to be within +/- 5% accurate. So if you are going 55mph, you could be going as slow as ~52mph or as fast as ~58mph. Now that coupled with the fact that even laser has its limits as far as the detection of speed. Typical numbers that I have seen have shown new laser systems to be as accurate as +/-2.5mph. That alone says that you have alteast a 5mph cushion to play with. Now couple that with the fact that in most jurisdictions anything below 9mph gets dropped down to a non-moving violation (that'* the way it is all over NY unless you have numerous prior tickets and/or the judge is having a bad day). In my experiences in NY, you get let off with a warning for anything +9mph and lower, if you get pulled over at all.

I myself have never and will never have a radar detector. I rarely go in excess of 9mph over the speed limit anymore... I'm reminded of a song "My car has nothing to prove". In my youth I had some difficulties with the local sheriffs (nice red car... Yeah, my chevelle was my first car). In my opinion, you are wasting your money on radar detectors, which in some states are illegal and will be destroyed if found by a cop. The number of states that are outlawing radar/laser detectors is increasing. And radar/laser jammers are illegal in pretty much all states.

Nicely stated swartlkk, I agree 100% with you! (Except my first car wasn't a red Chevelle, unfortunately )

Yes, legally you can be stopped for going ANY amount over the speed limit... but no cop in their right mind is going to ticket you for 5mph or less unless there is something else going on, no matter what your friends say. The police have bigger fish to fry, as the saying goes.

I'm with you two. Plus, you have to remember the speed limits are there for a reason.
