i think that was their original intention was to protect it.
but mine lays parrallel to the body now, even moreso than the one in that picture, and it works fine and has never caused any damaged at all, granted ive never bottomed out that hard....
but seriously, if someone were to bottom out THAT hard...i think the last of their worries would be "oh no my oxygen sensor!"
