Default Series 1-Series 2 Debate

Alright so here goes im going to be buying several 3.8 sc cars over the next several months. Here is what im looking at

93-96 Car price=2500-6000 rough estimates
97-00 Car Price=5000-8500

I personally want to stay around 5-6k with a decenly modded everyday driver. If i want a 10 second quarter mile i will build a small car with a sbc motor.
I basically want a fun daily driver.

Mod wise what is the best bang for the buck series 1 or series 2
Is there a difference in limitations of the stock block on series 1 and series 2

Just any general pros and cons between the two would be great.

Yes im sure i could have found it all stored away in the vault of information that is the usual forum but im honest and lazy and i like new fresh opinions.

your never going to get a series 1 as fast as a series 2. period. there is way more potential and way more aftermarket for the series 2.

IMO, if you want to mod, dont even consider a series 1, unless its going to be mild or with mostly appearance mods

x2 the fastest you can go in a series one is low 14'* I'd think with everything ported and such and that would be a 94/95.

also series II were in 96 not 97.

go for a 97+ series II, they have PCM support and you can break into the 13s with NOT that much money.

totally inaccurate, as said before every mod is available for the Series One as the Series 2 with the exception of the IC....

the 2 motors are really different, the Series One has the down Low Tq where as the Series 2 was a redesign of the motor and gives the Power a little higher in the RPM'*

the Series 2 has more *** kicking power, but the Series one is sure fun to listen to the whine of the Supercharger and the low end Tq

everone on this forum will give you a different answer on the debate. I have a Series One and a Series 2 SC, and i like them both

but the potential is not there with a series 1, especially not with the stock superchargers. The M62 is way too innefficient to compete with the m90

and honestly, an NA car isnt worth the time and money to mod for speed

totally inaccurate.

series one performance is NOT for the L67.

List of aftermarket that work with the series II that we dont have trusted or proven parts for a series one:

rockers?
cam?
heads?
Intercooler?
Headers?
Limited Slip Diff?
PCM?
hardened transmission parts? (not totally true since you can get beefed up 4t60e-hd parts but for the most part the 4t65e has more stuff available)

The M90 will always outflow a M62 and more efficiently. you can only go so small on an M62.

Dont consider a Series one if you want to go signifcantly faster than stock.

I however love the series one, it is way faster off the line and really pulls you back to about 35MPH, vs the s2 that takes its time to get up there and pulls at the higher end of the gears.

I'm a low-end torque guy myself.

reliablity as a daily driver? yeah...not tested, not proven, grind whatever you want, still not as good as something that has been thrown in hundreds of GPs and beat on daily.

aftermarket heads are not available, porting will run into limitiations with the stock ones, sure you can but not to the point of a series II aftermarket.

PEM'* are NOT headers and do not flow ANYWHERE CLOSE, they are still the log style regardless of how much you port them, true the series II is more restrictive than the series one, but still there are NO HEADERS FOR THE S1.
oh really now..is it. I've never seen one that will go in without modification.

No thats not a PCM, its a piggyback that you are still running the orginal PCM, no where near the options when it comes to a custom burnt s2 pcm. and I am doubting how much performance you can actually get from a stage 2, how much WHP will it produce (of course you can drop the pulley 1/10th or 1/5th of an inch with less KR, but that transforms into more heat in the motor the smaller pulley you go and with more heat you loose horsepower.

wrong yet again, you cannot get everything you can for a s2, however you can get one hell of a strong transmission that will handle a 13 second or faster 1/4 mile and will take abuse.... but no way somethign that will handle 9s or 10s or handle lots of abuse with mods on the motor..

there is stuff out there.....you just gotta look
i was not referring to S1 perfromance at all in any of the posts.....

anyway the Orignal poster is not looking to make a race car out of his vehicle in the first place...so the specificties of the products are moot....the fact is that the parts are out there

I've got a set of higher ratio Yella Terra roller rockers that I fully plan on installing on my project heads after I get them ported, with undercut swirl polished oversized valves, stronger springs and retainers... I'm gonna have to side with Pat on this one. The stuff is out there for the most part, just harder to find.

That said, the Series II is a better starting point with more research already done towards parts.
