Post Opinion on StopRepairBills.com

After seeing their ad on TV a million times, I decided to ask for more information, as their ad and website were wonderfully vague. I submitted online, and eventually got a call back.

I spoke to a rep named B*****n. He said that they negotiate with repair shops and dealerships as a warranty company, and can usually get a price up to 30% lower. I told him about my old P1870 code and that the transmission was on its way out, and said that the engine and body were in impeccable shape thanks to "some Internet car club." For my 1997 SE with 155,000 miles and a dying transmission (yes, I was honest, just for kicks), it would cost me $299 a year. When I told him that I didn't need 24/7 roadside assistance (thanks, AAA), he lowered the price to $239.

(For what it'* worth, my company sometimes picks up jobs from the Staples and Best Buy warranty company, so I know how these operations work. I'm one of the guys they send out to fix broken printers in Connecticut.)

For a transmission rebuild, local shops have quoted me anywhere from $1800 to $2500. One shop, to buy, check, and attach a used transmission for a CCSU student (his daughter attends), would cost $1250, but that was based on the part cost he pulled up. Up to 30% off from StopRepairBills.com could save up to $750 on a full rebuild, well more than the cost of the membership.

It sounds too good to be true.

Unfortunately, I started smelling snake oil showed when I thanked the sales rep for his time and said I'd call back. He then said that he would give me his "family/friends discount," lowering the price to $199. I tried explaining that I have no credit cards ("I don't have any either"), rent due next week ("yeah, me too"), and plenty of bills ("the economy is bad, but can you afford a transmission?"). I told him that if I could pay monthly installments (which would be $16 a month), we'd have a done deal, but he skirted around the question every time. Eventually, I got sick of playing telephone with him and hung up.

Has anyone else used or looked at this company? It seems like a good deal, unless one of the more transmission-friendly members here suddenly owe me a favor. However, it was painfully obvious that the sales rep worked on commission, and that left a sour taste in my mouth.

I told him that I do some work on the car myself, and know people who mod engines for fun. It didn't seem to faze him.

I forgot to mention that my engine is a little different from stock (K&N, low thermostat, 605'*, CAI next on the list). Thanks for the heads-up.

Nothing is free. Remember, they said UP TO 30% off, that includes nothing off.

ya they come and inspect your car when the teardown of the parts in question is complete before they will honor the repair and go over it with a fine tooth comb he saw my 3.4 pulley and automatically said no way his car is putting out more power than stock so it is my fault the tranny failed.

so complete teardown is on you until they say that they will cover it and i was stuck paying the $560 to pull the tranny and put it back in cause i couldn't afford the $2,006 for the new one

stoprepairbills.com and USFidelis both have a BBB of F and are both being sued by the state of Missouri for fraudulent acts.

I didn't read the whole case file. But, if you go to www.bbb.org you can search either one of them and read it.
