Default OnStar/Mileage Question

I'm helping my son to purchase a 2010 Chevy Ext Cab 4wd from a local individual. It'* a great deal $$$$ wise but the mileage seems a little to great. The current owner drives it to & from work 80+ miles round trip four days a week plus his everyday driving. The odometer is only showing 16,XXX miles for a 18 month old truck and the tires need replacing. He says it'* never had any troubles therefore never been to the dealer for any reason since he bought it. My question is, if he'* been swapping the instrument cluster in the vehicle will dealer be able to tell me this through on "OnStar monthly reports"? With my OnStar accounts I get monthly emails from them with my current mileage shown as I'm sure everyone else does. The mentioned truck does have a current OnStar subscription also. I just don't want my son to get get accused of mileage tampering if he has to take it in for warranty work if the same diagnostic reports that are emailed to us are also kept on the vehicles record somehow.
Thanks in advance!

I would ask the person selling it for the onstar report. Then you will know.

I probably will, if the miles are legit I didn't want to offend him. Also thought about just calling the dealer and seeing if they could tell me if they can access the OnStar information.

we had one of the guage pods changed becase it was bad on 06 at work it was a big deal to have the dash programed had to take it to the dealer and wait. i dont think it can be done without taking it to the dealer and they put the original mileage in it, i even think the mileage is kept in the computer or somewhere else.

hammerandnails1859,

I completely understand however if you are concerned about this I would recommend calling your local dealership about the situation and have them take a look at it.

Good luck!

The Mileage is in the PCM and I've never heard of it having to be reset with a gauge cluster replacement. We have had several GXP'* with this done without that. Unless somebody altered it intentionally. OEM tires aren't the best these days, my first set were replaced at 19,000...

I would just up and ask him for a current OnStar report. it can give you alot of relevant info.

Like most if not all cars with digital dash boards the mileage is kept in he computer (PCM) so doesn't matter how many miles is on it before the swap it will always show what the PCM tells it to show!!! Also alot of the free types of carfax reports will show the mileage, but it may be off alittle!! You also got to think maybe this guy may have another vehicle or drove the wifes car some time to work or even car pool...
