IIRC, Consumer Reports gave Fram filters a high rating in the past, although everybody here seems to think Fram is junk, but then Consumer Reports publishes the results of their taxi testing that seems to suggest that going 10K or more in city driving without an oil change is just peachy-keen for your engine, and everyone says they're geniuses. Sigh...

Personally, I'd probably stretch my 2K oil change intervals out to 10K if Consumer Reports was going to pay for my engine repairs, but while I'm stuck paying for my own repairs, I think I'll stick with my own oil-change schedule as well, thankyouverymuch...
I like it when reason kicks in...thus the orange stars!!

Default Bottom Line

The bottom line on Oil may be found here:
http://bobtheoilguy.server101.com/

Ceck the forums and get ready to learn.

Basically oil should be changed before it wears out. How do you know when that is? Used Oil Analysis UOA.

If you change every 3000 miles and use anything more than the least expensive API service rated Dino oil then you may be wasting money.

True synthetics can go 15000 miles in SOME cases, with filter changes along the way, read about it.

Filters are very important, Fram doesn't measure up to the standard you want generally. Which ones do? Actually quite a few. WIX,Champion, Pure One etc.

I tore down a 67 GTO 400 engine with 70,000 miles on it and it looked new, even the cross hatching on the cylinder walls was visible. Oil was quaker State 10W40 every 5000 or so.

well i tried it out i let mine go 6k without the change and the oil was filthy, it looked terrible. Plus when i did change it my engine was running about twice as quiet as before the change. so im gunna have to stick with the 3k rule here. I also agree with what some of u are saying about consumer reports or whatever. i always go with personal experience.

Someone else already mention this study.

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/*.../oil-life.html

My owners manual tells me to change the oil if the oil change light stays on for more than 10 seconds at start up or it comes on while driving.

Since I've had the car it has come on anywhere from 2500-6500 miles usually the higher end. All I use is Mobil1 but my filters vary. The Wix filters have lasted the longest and the off brand the shop used one time lasted the least.

My wifes SSEi has the % indicator when it gets to 0% you're supposed to change the oil.
