Oil Change information?
I have a 2001 Bonneville SE that I have kept the oil changed etc. It uses no oil between changes. It has 113,000 miles on it. I have spent about $1500 gettig it ready for the next 113,000 (I plan to keep it). Question is this. Would it make sense to go to a full synthetic oil such as Mobile 1, and go 6000 miles between changes, or stick with the 10W30 at 3000 between changes? the 10W30 is costing $34 at the quick lube place. This is a lot for every 3000 miles to me.
Thanks,
Bill

Yes, I know it costs more, but if it costs twice as much, but I only have to change it half as often, that kind of works out even doesn't it. The gain for me is less time (half as many trips) at the quick lube place, and better engine performace and longivity by using the synthetic. Does this make sense?

The Mobil 1 is decent oil. Also do not skimp on the filter. Use a Mobil 1 or WIX filter. I have only run a full syn since the first oil change. I usually go 5 to 6K between changes and my oil analysis usually comes back fine. I did have high silicone content once but that was due to a dirty air filter.
Wally World has the 5qt Mobil 1 oil for usually under $25.
Also do our Gearheads a big favor and put your vehicle information in your signature. It will help them to help you.

I go 10,000 miles between oil changes and have 165,000 miles on my car. The only way to know how dirty your oil is, is to get an oil analysis. I have done this twice(its time for another) on my car and the oil was still good at 10k, but i change it at 10k because its very simple to remember when to change the oil.
Even in my owner'* manual it says to change the oil at 7,500 miles. My car does not fall under the short trip definition of : "most" trips under 5 to 10 min., "most" trips include extensive idling, "most" trips are through dusty areas, tow a trailer, vehicle is used for (police), (taxi), or other commercial application. Actually i don't know anybody that drives under the "short trip definition" as used in the owner'* manual. I've used Mobil 1 since day 1(bought the car new in 2000).
Costco has an coupon for $8 off of a case of 6 qt'*. that is good for two cases($16 off of 12 qt'*). I have 3 coupon'* so i will get 36 qt'* of Mobil 1 5w/30, so that should keep me in oil for 60k or 70k miles. Oh, with the coupon the oil cost $21 per 6 qt'*.
