Anyhow now that the rod has too much clearance, I get the feeling from the sound I hear the piston was kissing the head...
I await the new engine..

Mike I will ask one favor of you...
Once you find the time and you get the engine apart, I would love to see some good quality pics of the bearings( Bad Rod ) and the rod journal, the rod its self, and the piston as well as the bottom of the head for the cylinder of the offending rod...

That 51000 km engine ( 31000 mile) engine for 300$ before 15% tax ( 345$) is now MINE. It was actually still in the car. They should have it out in time for me to pick up on Friday so I can try and re-install it on the weekend and Renee can have her car back. I also went ahead and ordered a new AC compressor, since it was leaking and that'* hopefully why the ac stopped working after we had it fixed. It is the only place where we could see the dye that was put in.
And now SAY HELLO to my new(used) engine.
If you look on the drivers side of the engine you will see a black bracket that is sticking up, that goes to a dog bone that is then secured by the rad. Mine doesn't have that but they will leave on and I can install it if I want.
Any idea how that low of a mileage engine ( original engine in the car) can still be around? The car was brought in about a year ago, it was rolled, and other than the roof and windshield it was in awesome shape.
now for the donor car.
It'* a 1988 Trofeo. Only way I found the year was on t receipt saying what the Vin number was.
jr's3800: I still plan on tearing into the engine, maybe not right away though. My friend also figures it is a rod bearing, he just couldn't pin point which cylinder it was from. He also said the knocking sounds like a wrist pin(sp?) or a few other possibilities. He is also curious to see what went wrong. He will laugh at me for taking pics of it though, he can't believe I take pics of the stuff I do ( car related)

I don't agree with the wrist pin... But, given that the rod bearing has spun...I'm pretty sure it has... Then you may just find a damaged or crushed wristpin as well... There may have been enough clearance for the Piston to nail the crapp out of the head causing the wrist pin to be damaged... when you get to it, you'll know all in a hurry...LOL
Just gald that you found another motor for her... Now lets hear her run...

A bad wrist pin would not sound quite that bad, to my understanding it would more of a consitant tick tick tick, almost like a lifter..
My cutlass sounded EXACTLY like that.
Ncie find on that engine!

I have heard wrist pins go bad, and it is more of a tap...
But the one interesting thing I saw was the oil on the papertowel, this is the reason some of you have seen me ask what color the oil was if an engine was knocking or blew up... That graphite looking color on the papertowel tells the truth about the bottom end... speaks volumes when I see that...
Renee & Mike would have had no real idea that was going to happen... But this means that there were problems before they went on their trip... And with 9 owners, its hard to say how the car was treated... I have seen a few GM engines do exactly as theirs did.. It happens from time to time... Just sorry it had to happen..
Anyhow, Out with the old and busted and in with the new hotness
And the way i drive mine, I am almost afraid...
