k so im looking at ZZP for tranny parts,
again, i dunno anything about trannys, so if someone can explain the following that would be great

1. i thought all GTPs came with HD trannys, so whats HD?
2. whats the input shaft?
3. whats the output shaft?
4. whats Hardened 4th Clutch Shaft
5. on ZZP i can see all TCs with different stall speed for the same price, what is a stall speed? how do you know which one is best to choose?
6. i think stock GTP ratio was 2.93, what does that mean? and whats the advantage of going to 3.29 or 3.69?
7. whats an EPC solenoid? cant see it on ZZP

hope thats not too much, but i would really appreciate any help.

its just that i dont wanna buy the car knowing i need the car price worth of tranny work

i just wanna see how much im looking for parts wise and what work i can do myself

thanks
samz

1. i thought all GTPs came with HD trannys, so whats HD?
HD means Heavy Duty. This is a bit of a sticky spot with our transmissions. The NA cars had a regular duty trans. The differences are drive/driven gears, output shaft, differential, differential housing.

2. whats the input shaft?
This is the shaft that the torque converter turns. The torque converter is bolted to the flywheel and turns the input shaft.

3. whats the output shaft?
This is the long shaft that spans from the differential to the driverside axle, or from one side of the trans to the other.

4. whats Hardened 4th Clutch Shaft
The 4th clutch hub/shaft is a shaft that drives 4th gear. From 97-02 this shaft was not hardened and it would wear down and lose it'* splines over time. When it wears enough, you lose 4th gear. Like Sawgunner...

5. on ZZP i can see all TCs with different stall speed for the same price, what is a stall speed? how do you know which one is best to choose?
Stall speed depends on your motor and the parts in it. If you rev high, you tyipcally bring the stall up slightly to harness that power and stay up in rpm'*. 3000 seems to be a great one in our cars when cammed/intercooled. Not sure what the fiero should get.

6. i think stock GTP ratio was 2.93, what does that mean? and whats the advantage of going to 3.29 or 3.69?
Stock ratio is 2.93, the advantages of going with the 3.29 or 3.69 is they are lower ratios (higher number = lower ratio) that moves the car off the line quicker and easier. The downside is you lose top end.

7. whats an EPC solenoid? cant see it on ZZP
Electronic Pressure Control, this is probably the most common failure of the 4T65 transmission. It controls pressure to make the transmission work ...when it fails..your trans had troubles and throws codes.

A lot of people use the 2500 stall TC, personally I think the 3000 is a better choice. Although you hear slipping when you pull away from a stop, so you need to get used to that. But, cams have a power curve of about 2650-6500PRM. A 3000 stall gets you in the curve before lock up. The slipping also helps with traction, less tire slip.

As Bill said, spring for the 300m input shaft

Ignore the output shaft, your just not going to brake that.

Search for posts from me, look for spring build comes early in general chat. I rebuilt my transmission in that thread. It'* not a hard thing to do. My suggestion is to go no deeper then the gears. Keep it clean. And if possible, get a engine stand that rotates and make a bracket like in the thread. Makes rebuilding the trans much easier. Thanks Bill for that idea.

300M or Intense input shaft. My preference is the Intense part.

The output shaft can and does break. However ZZP'* gun drilled is more apt to break than a stock shaft.

You reassembled your transmission, this should not be confused with rebuilding. Rebuilding requires gasket changing, clutch replacement and some part replacement with upgraded parts and a valve body rebuilding/change to the updated version.

I think Bill is still running stock axles. And he hasn't broken any that I know of.

how does he drive his car though? looking at his sig doesnt seems too nicely :P jk

but thanks for the info guys i guess if this deal does go thru (mostly likely it will by the end of this month) i might place on big order from ZZP/intense. as for the install, we'll see how it goes

im getting the car for alot cheaper than what i was expecting, so i guess spending a little on the tranny shouldnt be that bad

You might want to consider getting HPtuners. It will come in real handy.

That should be licensed to what ever the PCM on that engine came from.
