Engine Surge
Got my 92 Bonnie SE last month. Noticed that going thru 45-50 mph I would get a randon surge or slight hesation. Symptons were like down shifting to a lower gear. It didn't do it all the time just at randon times. Anyway, day before yesterday I had an oil change at my local Pont dealer and when the guy raised the hood to add oil he asked me if I have recently checked for bad plugs or a bad wire. I told him no and didn't know what the hell he was talking about. I found out. there was a piece of rubber about one inch long on one of the plugs between the wire and the plug. The mechanic said it is used to check for a bad wire or a plug. He took it off and now no surge. I was planning to have a tune-up next month anyway. Point is, if buying a used Bonnie check out everything throughly.I never noticed that little piece of rubber when I looked under the hood.

jr's3800, Yea, I plan on having the plugs changed in the nest few weeks since I don't know what actual maintance was done on the car. No surge or roughness now that the mechanic removed that piece of rubber but I think a tune-up is in order.

Mine is so smooth now after getting an o2, Taylor wires (lots of dielectric goo) Delco plugs, air filter, and Ram Air...Ram air makes it very smooth and silky at speed now. Never hesitates at all. Ditching the last owneres Fram filter made a HUGE difference too. It doesn't make weird noises when freshly started. Plenty of oil flowing to get to the top of the engine.
EDIT:: Try some STP injector cleaner. I've heard 3x a year is a good idea for the stuff.

I guess I will find out if it solves the problem when I take it in for a tune up later on this week. Plan on doing the plugs any wires that need replaced, O2 sensor, fuel filter, PCV.

Got a tune up this morning. New wires, plugs, fuel filter, PCV. O2 Sen was okay. Do notice that I don't get a randon surge anymore so must of had a bad wire. My aircraft mechanic friend suggested to put a bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner on next top off. He does his about twice a year. Any pros or cons about using an injector cleaner?

Heat is the biggest killer of our stock wires. A good quality silocon wire does well. 9 out of 10 times, if a wire goes, it'* a rear wire. Alot more heat back there. If you ever have your valve covers off, you'll see a marked difference in color from the front to the rear valvetrain.
Rear wires and plugs really take a heat pounding.

jr's3800, Sound like a good idea. Planning on doing a road trip next week to Syracuse. Will give me a chance to "blow out" the engine will going up the interstate. Mainly I have just been doing city driving stop and go.
