so my car wont start today and I check the battery and when I go to take it out the ******* + terminal comes clean off, well not clean off because acid started dripping off into my car because someone at gm got the great Idea to put the battery under the back seat so on top of that the sunroof has been leaking all the way to the bottom of the door seals and the headlights are hazing and probably a bunch of other **** I don't know about yet. so here I am blowing off steam

WOW!!!!!!! This EXACT thing happened to me yesterdat too I just hadn't had achance to post about it.

I walked out to my car to go to work. Put the key in the ignition and all I got was two clicks. I was thinking to my self WTF.... but calmly got up and lifted the seat to check the battery cables thinking maybe one had come loose. As soon as I grabed the postive cable and give it the smallest little wiggle to ensure it had a good connection the entire thing came out the side of the battery and into my hand. 97.00 later for a new battery and I was on my way. Lucky for me I had planned to leave for work really early that day and was still able to get to work on time. Since it was an AC Delco battery I took it to the AC Delco parts store right down the road and they told me that it was still the original equipment from 2001 and that they had a known design flaw that cuased it to happen. He ensured me that the new ones would not do this.

Maybe we need to get the word out to all 01 Bonneville owners to check for this condition. Some may still have the oem batteries in thier cars. I've never heard of this problem I have to admit.

Welcome to the wonderful world of AC/DELCO batteries. We've had this discussion several times..

I had two leak/positive break off on our Suburban.. Rusted everything from the tray on down.

I have an 03 and I am pulling the back seat out to check all the time! I remember seeing GM has gone so far to post a TSB on fixing the floor pan and replacing the seat belts since the acid weakens them.

Can you post a picture of what damage it did?

Pat

no damage other than the water that had collected next to the battery from the sun roof. It didnt leak at all untill i checked it and the terminal popped off. I sprayed this stuff that prevents battery corrosion and put the seat back on. Oh since I work at a huge car dealer I get 25% discounts on parts so I paid around 80 for a $110 battery.

ya.. mine also did no real damage since there was no leak of acid untill the terminal came off in my hand. I was able to pull the battery out before it had much of a chance to leak anywhere.

That happened in my 97SE. Battery terminal fell clean out of the battery, acid started leaking out. Happened under really *REALLY* bad circumstances too.

July 2002, I had a triple bypass at age 35 after getting chest pains while bicycling. Wife drives me home from the hospital in my Bonneville. We stop at Wallgreens to get my pain medication prescription filled, because my pain meds were gonna wear off in 30 minutes. She goes inside, 20 minutes later comes back with the prescription. Turns key, car won't start. We can't figure it out. Call a friend who brings jumper cables. Neither my wife, nor her friend know how to jump start a car. I get out, wearing a bathrobe, slippers, and holding a floppy-eared stuffed toy rabbit, with a freshly sewn up chest, and I jump start the damn car. We get home.

A day or two later I call a buddy over to help me figure out what'* wrong with my battery. We go look at it, touch the battery cable, and the entire positive terminal falls right off the battery, casing cracked in a complete circle around the battery terminal.

I got a new battery from Sears a day later, had my buddy help pull the battery, cleaned everything up with some baking soda and water, then installed the new battery. It also got brand new battery cables after that. Still going strong. (Both me and the battery.) The one time you really need to rely on your car. . .
