Default Extended warranties - I need to research this

I might be interested in an extended warranty for my GXP.
I think there is a variety of them out there that you can buy.
I bought a used corvette in the 80'* that had an extended warranty and it didn't cover crap.
I had to fight the dealer to get stuff paid for - I think it was from some outside company.
The extended warranties that I bought through the dealer when I bought my new GM cars seemed to cover most any item that wasn't a maintenance/wear issue.
I always bought the ones from GM when I purchased the vehicle, I don't know if they are underwritten by an outside company, or are they all the same from GM.
Well I bought my GXP used, and it doesn't have an extended warranty. I need advice on the best one. I get lots of cards in the mail from these companies
selling extended warranties for my car. They don't seem very--well, legitimate.
The prices, the service, getting GM dealers to honor them, and any other personal feedback or experience would be appreciated.
I was also told by someone that extended warranty prices are negotiable from one dealer to the next. :?:

I bought a Guardian warranty for my Chrysler, $1800 for 12 years/100,000 miles. Covers damn near everything. I've had to use it twice for wheel bearings that went way too early. Service was great, I called up, they let me know it was covered, and I let them know who was repairing it. Very painless process.

I just got a 5 year 100k warranty from warranty direct for my GXP $2200, took my car in and had it serviced for the strut mount (about $200)that broke paid $50 and was out of there. $50 is my deductible. They will pay for the towing and pay for a rental car also but they dont pay for you to have the rental car if the part is getting ordered and your car is in the shop for a couple of days. They go by how long the labor is going to be on the car. So 1 hour of labor equalled out to one day of rental car and thats it. Even though your car is in the shop for 3-4 days.

I bought mine from Agape Auto Warranties. http://www.agapeautowarranties.com for my 2000 SSEi. Tuesday the Bonne goes in for inspection. I know the LIM needs replaced. We'll see how the service is when the claim is made. My coverage is complete, including gaskets and seals. So this should be a simple $100 for me and the rest covered.

I'll report results when I have them

From a former GM dealership service advisor, get a GMPP Major Guard (pick your deductable), or don't bother. All the advisor has to do is call a number, enter a labor operation (a code for the work needing to be done), and get an automated instant response. With most others, they call, talk to a rep from the service contract company, and argue about labor rates and parts prices. Then, IF they get it straight, they have to wait on credit card payment from the company after the work is done. Some are OK, and some suck. Sometimes, the company won't pay for extras, like needed fluids or other things. It'* a huge PITA, and can cause delays for YOU, the customer.

Dealerships can charge up to list price for the warranty, or discount them as they please. There are online places to buy discounted GMPP warranties. Just do a search for GMPP service contract, and check them out. Some have instant quote calculators.

Honest to God, no BS, I sold one to my own mother before. You MAY be ok with an aftermarket warranty, but I feel that it'* a roll of the dice. I've seen the disasters first hand.

I have an "old" warranty co. called CNA - don't remember what ,if anything, it stands for. Bought a 3 year 36,000 for $1700 thru Carmax when I bought my 01 SSEi for $13,000. It has covered most everything, and I do mean everything but disposables. Paid out $4500 so far.
Also, my favorite shops have told me that it is a good warranty 'cause I paid good money. IOW, you get what you pay for.

Good luck!

I bought a GMPP warranty from my dealer when I bought my car. It had a $100 deductible and covered the car out to 60,000 miles. After I hit 60,000 miles I went back to my dealer and asked what kind of warranty they could sell me at that point, and they basically told me I could buy a new car.

I did get good use out of the GMPP warranty, and will vouch that they cover all your mechanical stuff except wear and tear items, and they are super-easy to work with. On a vacation away from home area my water pump went out. I pulled into a Chevy dealership and handed them my warranty. They looked it up, smiled, and said "We'll take care of this." -and they did.

I had my LIM done under the GMPP warranty. (And did it again later when it was out of warranty.) Again, no complaints on the GMPP service.

One thing my dealership'* service manager mentioned to me. . . They aren't allowed to "hunt" for things to fix for you under your GMPP warranty, so it is to your advantage to come in (for an oil change or something) and say "You know, I'm not completely sure, but I might have seen a fluid drip on my garage floor, could you please check for any seals that might be leaking?" -That way if they find anything that is leaking, they don't have any problem getting GMPP to cover it, because you requested they look for a leak. I had a lot of otherwise *really* expensive seals replaced that way.

Concerning non-GMPP warranties, don't buy a warranty offered by a car dealership, the kind where it'* between THEM and YOU, where you're only supposed to have their shop do the work. People on here have been screwed by those, including an LIM failure where they denied warranty coverage because the warranty excluded problems "caused by failure of a non-covered part"; where the "emissions system" was not-covered in the warranty, and the dealership claimed the LIM failure is caused by the EGR overheating due to a clogged cat. -You don't need that type of headache. (Also, I think it was a Subaru dealership that didn't know jack about 3800 engines.) It'* a good thread, you should read it.

Haggling over price on a GMPP warranty at a dealership is easier to do at the time you're buying a car and haggling over the price. They might not be as willing to negotiate afterwards.

At higher mileage, you might do best with a bare-minimum warranty that covers just the engine and transaxle, and pay for other repairs on your own, or better yet, do them yourself!

Info on what'* going on with my claim (as promised above)
This warranty is backed by Warranty America

The GM dealer said the coolant loss was not the LIM, but the radiator. My list of items to be covered are:

The warranty company insisted on less labor hours than the dealer asked for. It seems the warranty company uses Alldata for their labor time estimates. I have no access to verify they're using the numbers correctly. Such as the window regulator, they will give 1.3 labor hours to diagnose and r&r the regulator. The dealer wanted 3 hours. In the end, the dealer accepted the lower hours.

The warranty company insisted on sourcing any part over $100. This would be the first 3 parts. The option I had was accept the aftermarket part (unknown brand, but said to be new with a 12mo/12K mile warranty) or pay the difference between the part cost sourced by the warranty company vs the GM part cost. In the case of the radiator, the difference was $198. I opted to accept the warranty parts (just can't justify the costs right now) and the dealer agreed to install the parts.

The warranty company insisted on an adjustor inspecting the car before work was done. This was done on a Thursday. Paperwork was turned in after hours Friday, it took till the following Tuesday (and several more than pleasant calls to the warranty company) to get them to call the dealer to get the info about what was going on. Late Tuesday, after closing of course, the warranty company informed me of the options I had. I told them to send the parts to get the fix moving. So parts only began arriving today, Thursday) to get the car fixed. Two of the three parts are there, still waiting on the rad as of now. So I'm now out the car for 7 days so far.

I have rental reimbursement on the repair, they cover 3 days max. They delayed the fix for 5 days. I think they should have covered more days as it was their fault. I didn't actually rent a car. Driving the GN daily now. Two rounds of severe t-storms and I'm quite upset I suffered damage to the hood of this car. 1987 with 36K miles, it used to look way nicer than it does now. Oh, it'* still the factory paint. They won't cover damage to my other car.

I hope the rad shows up soon and I can get my car back Friday, or it'll be another weekend and more time I don't want to drive this car.

The tie rods will require an alignment. The warranty does not cover this. I can't imagine replacing a tie rod end and NOT doing an alignment. That'* insane. So I'll have to pay for the $100 deductable, and the alignment. The rest is covered, and the cost is slightly higher than the cost of the warranty right now. So I did get me money invested, but got some aggrivation with it. I'm still covered till 2011 or 129K miles (has 74K now). I expect to see more repairs and the warranty will have saved me some money.

Comparing warranties, the GM warranty was priced at $2000 more than the Warranty America warranty, and covered less time and mileage. So I'm OK right now, but not as satisfied as I had hoped to be. If I get disgusted enough and decide to sell the car, $50 will transfer the warranty to another owner, so it'll still be worth something if I decide to move on to something else.

Will report final bill when I get my car back.....stay tuned.

I hope this info helps somebody.
