Secrets revealed! (56K go have a beer)
Well I had a bit of time tonight before getting ready for tomorrow race ( go-karts) so I figured I would dig into my blown engine and find out what the hell went wrong.
Of course I took pics.
Here are a few shots in it'* new home ( for now).
Time to drain the oil.
Time to remove the fuel rail for future transplant onto the new engine to try and solve the long cranking before starts and the slight miss at idle. I like how the Haynes manual says to gently rock the fuel rail and injectors to remove, yeah right, on a 15 year old engine, you need a bit of help. SCREWDRIVER and PLIERS,lol
no more injectors
There they are
Hey what is that name I see on the FPR
Boy a couple of these injectors look their age, time for a new o-ring kit before re-installation.
Now to remove the oil pan and have a look inside,
EWWW that is not good
Same picture but with the flash off, look at all those shiny bits, hmm looks like a good area to start investigating
Looks not bad
Let me give it a crank and start at cyl #1, what is this sticking out, that'* not supposed to be there.
Let me turn the flash on, yep that really shouldn't be there.
Lets have a look under that cap, Hmmm that ain't right,
How about the rest of the engine, that looks good
That looks good too
Yep definitely cyl 1 that is the problem
Lets peel that bearing off the cranks to have a better look, which one is the good one?? I wonder.
Can you spot the NOT??
Here they are,
Can you spot which one is cyl 1, look at the difference in shine ( far right hand side in case you didn't notice, LOL.
Here is what a good crank looks like, the center section that the bearing rides on sits higher than the sides.
Here is cyl #1, it wore down the crank so there is no more raised section on at least half of it
Let'* have a look at the engine with the crank out. Hmmmm not bad for just over 200,000 kms on it. BTW the bearings still had oil between them and the rods, in case you were wondering.
Good thing I reduced teh size of these pics, eh?

But that first pic with the discolored rod told the whole story
