Turn the key forward, and put the car into and out of park a few times, then try again. Sometimes the brake switch doens't work correctly.

That'* happened to me a few times in my 99. The car isn't going completely into park, thus, not allowing the key cylinder to fully turn back. The rubber boot that covers the gear shift button was slipping and not allowing the car to go all the way into park. I just repositioned it and then the car would go all the way in park. Issue solved.

Try rocking the car forward and backward while you're shifting into park, as well.

Gotta agree with everyone here, maybe rolling 1mph, shift into park if you don't have anyone to help you....

Just be careful!

Bad idea. Don't do that! (unless you're looking for an excuse for a performance trans).

I mean VERY slowly, but then again, i guess you're going thru reverse...

Just enough to twist the gears enough to unlock it. Moving inches.

Darn shift interlocks....I had this problem on another car and starting the car up again and shifting from D back into P fixed it.

The shift interlock is not the issue here; your problem is obviously getting into Park, not out of it. It sounds like the console shifter is not turning the steering column shift bowl back far enough to allow the ignition switch to turn to the Lock position, which locks the steering column and allows you to remove the key.

I think if you look at your steering column while moving the shifter back and forth between Reverse and Drive, you should see part of the outer column turning as you move the lever. Now push the shift lever as far into Park as you can, then grab the shift bowl with your hands and see if you can help it turn a bit further in the direction it wants to go, and see if you can now turn your key back to Lock and get it out. Let us know how it goes.
