Default SSEI Supercharger Noise

I just purchased a 96 SSEI and there is a rattling type noise under the hood. 2 people suggested it could be a power steering pump or alternator. Took it back to Dealership and service said noise is coming from the Supercharger, however they will not replace it because it is working. Anyone ever heard of noise coming from Supercharger?

Yes, yes!

Does it rattle at idle speed only, or at all speeds?

Oh by the way, their excuse sounds like BS, and I get so tired of poor customer service, this is one thing that pisses me off. There is likely a problem in the head unit.

Yup. Not a new thing. The first thing to ask is how much boost you get at WOT? Should be at least 9-10 psi this time of year. The colder air is denser.

If your boost is good, we're looking at a coupler (hopefully) or a gear/bearing failure on it'* way. You can get just the nosedrive assembly if the impellers are good and you have good boost.

It'* not really that big of a deal to do this. Couplers are cheap, but you really need to open the nosedrive (remove it from the SC) to determine this.

Isolating the noise to your OWN satisfaction is the first step. Use a stethescope or screwdriver held to your ear in the same manner (careful of moving parts, screwdrivers are a bitch to remove from your ear), and be sure that'* where the noise is coming from, then determine what KIND of noise it is. We can take it from there. Let us know how much boost you get under WOT, and what you find out about this pesky little noise.

I notice the noise mostly at an idle. It sounds almost like a belt, but my belts are fine.

If the supercharger is making a noise not normally associated with gear lash or bearing failure, it'* probably the coupler. It'll cost you about 40 bucks plus oil. Maybe a couple hours of time.....oh, a gasket, too. Call it 3 hours .
