NHTSA OPENS GM INVESTIGATION
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has moved ahead with a possible safety recall on 2.3 million GM cars. The NHTSA has been investigating reports of engine problems that could lead to a fire, Reuters reports. The vehicles involved include some Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick and Oldsmobile models made between 1996 and 2000. The NHTSA has logged 604 complaints that the vehicles with 3800 V-8 engines backfire and leak fuel from fractured manifolds; 44 fires have also been reported. GM has issued a recall for some 1996 models for similar problems, the news service reports, but several design changes have not stopped the reports. The current NHTSA investigation could become a full recall if the agency determines through its ongoing engineering analysis that the engines are defective.

Car companies often won't fix a problem that they know exists unless they are forced to do so by the Feds even if it is a saftey issue.
Go find any Ford Taurus with the 3.0 liter V6 pushrod motor built from about 95 to 2000 or 2001. If the motor has more then 12,000 miles on it the coolant will have begun to turn brown and sludge like. By the time the motor has 20,000 miles on it the coolant will look like chewing tobacco that has been spit out in a dip cup.
Ford knows abou this problem and will not fix it. Some people have gotten new motors under warranty claims but many people don't know about the problem. Ford won't do a recall and will only handle these cases on an individual warranty basis.
