No, no, you don't need to hide any record of the car; my point was that if the owner still owes anything on the car (apparently not, from what you said here), they may not necessarily be able to give it to you, if the outfit to whom he/she owes the money has a lien on the car. If there'* a lien on it, you probably can't get the title transferred over, at least not until they sign off on the lien.

I'm not trying to make this sound like brain surgery and a free car is still a free car; I'm just saying that you want to CYA by doing the paperwork right, and then _keep_ the title, etc., for as long as the carcass is in your driveway. Unless you're going to bury the leftovers in your backyard, sooner or later you're going to need a junkyard to haul away the remains, and at that point you will need to sign its title over to them, and they'll take it along with the car. So definitely don't lose, shred or destroy any records connected to it: there'* nothing to gain by doing that.
