Default Sounds fishy...

My parents called me all excited, telling me how they took their 96 SE into the transmission shop for a quote. It'* been slipping VERY badly, and it has about 120K on the tranny and a lead-footed driver. So I guess the guy spent about an hour looking at the car, driving it, etc... and then came back saying that the tranny'* fine, it'* just that their engine'* all clogged up. He said if they ran Techron or a similar product through, the shifting problems would go away.

I did a search on Techron, and it seems like okay stuff, but I didn't see ANYTHING about it helping transmissions. Did my parents get really dumb advice? It just sounds too magic bullet-y to me :?

Do YOU know the tranny'* slipping? (That is, have YOU driven it?)
If you haven't, is it possible your folks have simply misdiagnosed the problem? I can see where misfires could be misinterpreted as a slip...

If the tranny really IS bad, then the shop is blowing smoke and obviously doesn't want to take on the work for some reason (e.g., too busy, doesn't know that tranny, knows the engine is about to fail and doesn't want a hassle).

I would ask more questions... although a bogged down engine can seem like a slipping transmission to some.

Isn't a slip when you try to accelerate, but nothing happens for a sec and then the RPMs jump WAY up and you lurch forward? That'* what I thought it was And yes, I've driven that car, for a week in march when I was home for break.

Actually, a slip is more like you hit the gas, the RPMs climb, but you don't go any faster (or you slowly gain speed, but not in proportion to RPMs). That is to say, the engine goes faster, but the car doesn't - almost like you threw it in neutral...

I had that same issue when my 95 need plugs. I thought it was the tranny going that was at 98K and still going strong

Hmm, so maybe it'* worth a try? Also sounds like a tune-up would be a good idea too, I'm gathering.
