2002 *-10 no reverse
So anyway, for the last few weeks I have been eyeballin this 2002 Chevy *-10 Crewcab pickup sitting infront of someones house for sale. $3500. That'* quite a bit below KBB and NADA. Hmmm, so finally after work today I decided to stop and take a look at it. Bodies in good shape, little bit of rust (I mean a LITTLE), new tires. Uh oh. What'* this paper in the window. 108,000miles yada yada yada, 4x4 blah blah blah NO REVERSE. 1500 just to repair the no reverse. That'* why its been sitting for so long.
Iv'e heard about this no reverse dilemma before with the 4L60E'*. I'm just surprised my wifes 2000 blazer with 165,000 miles hasn't bit the dust yet.
Quick google search yields its more than likely the reaction sun gear. Another quick search....about $150 for the kit. Do some more research, they say its easier to replace the part, than it is to pull the transmission out. Well, heck, can't be that hard. I've done my FWD many times.
So, I'm gonna go talk to the owner tomorrow hopefully after work.
Does anyone have any exeperience with this sun gear?

Well mike the tranny is easy to remove. I think you have to pull the tranny to replace the sun gear. I think it comes out the front of the tranny. Not positive.

Very common problem with the 4L60s, The reaction sun shell splines strip out and no reverse. Easy job, pull the trans out, pull the pan off, remove the TCC PWM solenoid and TCC solenoid, remove bell housing and oil pump. Disengage 2/4 band off the anchor pin, remove input housing and reverse input drum as an assembly. Take off snap ring and remove input planetary set, then you're at the sunshell. I think there'* an aftermarket one called a Beast sunshell that'* a lot stronger than the factory one. Let us know how it turns out!

Thanks Rich and Shaun. That'* what I have been reading everywhere. I heard that the Beast sunshell can be kind of a "beast" to install. Something about grinding something to make it fit due to its size. Eh. I'll worry about it if and when I get to that point.
Yes, also seen that the trans does need to come out.

I think the price is high also. KBB is a fictional book, prices are pure fantasy. NADA is ok, Edmunds is good, and Black Book is real pricing.
A little bit of rust on a S10 is not good. Once they start to rust it keeps rusting and rusting. Rust along the driver side rocker panel is a very bad thing.
I would think anything above $1500 is too much for the truck. At 100k miles on the 4.3, you can project a LIM gasket, water pump, radiator, alternator and vacuum hose replacements in the very near future.

Just did an appraisal on the S10, came in much higher than I would of expected. I guess the crew cab is the reason.
Edmunds shows dealer trade in at 2752, 3172 private party.
On a good note, you know these vehicles. They break all the time, but if you know em, you can fix them before they leave you stranded (fuel pump and ignition switch).

I think they all have the crappy CPI injectors.
For some reason, my bank just seen that the one I'm looking at is "$10,000".
Now, I seen a stealership in the area I work at selling the same thing 2002(not sure on body style) but they had that one listed at $12,900. I should be picking this thing up in about 2 days or so.

Not familiar with the Beast shell myself, just heard a lot of guys upgrading to it on the LS1truck forum I'm on when they go to put any much more power than stock through the 4L60. Good time to upgrade the 3/4 clutches and forward sprag while you're in there, they are the other two weak links in this tranny.
