Yep, its wider.

A 96 GP has a front track of 59.60" and a rear of 58.20" Overall width 71.90"

A 97 GP has a front track of 61.70" and a rear of 61.70" Overall width 72.70"

Its wider, not by alot, but its certainly wider.

I've got the 97 GP and it'* wider. I like the way it handles on a curvy road.
