Gas, Oil And Gas Mileage **** SERIES II ENGINES****
Just curious, is it fine to put 93 octane in an N/A Bonne, any good or bad effects? What about using synthetic oil, is it a waste of money? I usually only use synthetic but the mechanic where I got the Bonne said it'd be a waste of money in the Bonne because it hasn't been used from day 1... Also curious as to what your gas mileage is in city driving? I've been trying to figure out how to guage my gas mileage by the reading on the gas guage and the trip odometor but if that'* correct than I'm only getting about 16mpg which is rediculous! I think I'm not doining something right.... My calculations showed that each little tick mark on the gas guage is .75 gallons, not sure if that is correct but theirs 24 total tick marks and the gas tank is 18 gallons. So in order to get 20mpg according to this theory, if the tank is full than by the time your at 3/4 of a tank you should have driven 90 miles.....not happening with me :? It'* more like 70.

I don't know that I can vote in your poll, because I don't do straight city driving in my '98...I'm a mix of about 25%/75% city/freeway. With that, I get about 23-24 mpg.
In that same car when we hit the highway on vacation, we get 30-32 mpg.
My wife'* '04 is seeing about 50%/50% city/highway right now, and its DIC is telling us 18.3 mpg. Haven't had that baby on a long trip yet.
All this is on 87 octane. On a stock n/a, nothing more is needed (unless you are experiencing bad knock).
As for synthetic oil. It costs more, yes; but when I factor in 7500 mile oil changes (versus 3750 mile with dino), plus 5% to 10% better fuel economy (in my experience), plus greatly reduced valvetrain noise, etc., I think it is worth it.
P.*.: 16mpg in 100% city driving in that car is probably not too bad.
P.P.*.: I don't know about yours, but my gas gauge is not really linear...i.e., when it reads 1/2, it has actually consumed more than 1/2 the tank. The best way to measure mpg'* is to fill the tank, drive a few days, record miles driven, re-fill (at same pump!), record gallons, then calculate.
P.P.P.*.: I supposedly have an 18 gallon tank, too...but I can squeeze at least 22 gallons into it when it'* way down on "E"; that filler tube must be huge.

Even if we all drove purely in the City, traffic, streets, length of commute, and several other factors make the poll options worthless.
The only way to really compare is by freeway driving at a pre-determined speed on a long trip.
Premium fuel is simply harder to ignite than low or mid-grade. There'* no 'power' in it. It'* a waste of money for a non-supercharged engine UNLESS you have an aftermarket PCM advancing your timing.
Every car here should be capable of 30mpg on the freeway. Even my beast gets 32mpg at 70mph.
In addition, the amount of fuel in your 'first' or 'top' quarter tank is more than the 'bottom' or 'last' quarter tank. Your fuel tank isn't a geometrically perfect shape. The top half of the tank has more usable volume than the bottom.

Ditto that. You can't go by the guage. I never go by the guage for how much gas I have left. After figuring many many times what I normally get for mileage, I go by the miles I've driven.
I estimate I get around 20-22 in the city, but hard to really tell since I drive 75% highway.

I live in a smaller town of 30,000. Most trips are very short so we average around 15-16 in town at best. I've seen several at 14.5 on the cluster.
I hate comparing city mileage. There are too many factors.. Small town and short trips, hills, agressive driving and etc. But those are my numbers on my 03 SSEi.

I'm of the mind that you can't base your city MPG off anything but what it is with a good maintained engine.
You can't control stoplights, pedestrians (stop running them over..it'* illegal), and many other factors that are huge to MPG.
However..if I were in the city..my MPG would be infinity.. I wouldn't drive.

Use synthetic if you wish. You'll get longer change intervals, better MPG, and better protection for your engine.
