The compressor didn't have to be replaced if your car was infact upgraded to R134A. You won't find anything on the compressor.

The best way to determine what you have/had is by looking for a sticker in the engine bay (typically on top of the radiator shroud) that indicates it was updated to R134A along with a date of service. If you can't find that sticker then try checking with the previous owner.

Switching to R-134a might be your best bet anyways. It'll be pricey though most likely no matter what you do.
