So the wife calls me up after she gets home from work and says the oil pressure has been fluxuating from 0 to 80 all day and it has a loud "banging" sound when the car is above 2k RPM. So after cringing and calling a tow truck to take it to my mechanic I find out some bad news. The bad news hasn't stopped yet. If the parts keep adding up I'm tempted to replace the whole motor. It only has about 150k miles but since she didn't let me know immediately I am expecting the worse.

So now to my question. I have a 2002 SE so it'* a 3800 series 2 NA. If I buy a new engine would a supercharged engine drop right in? I'm also looking for recomendations on a good place to buy a motor.

As far as dropping it in. It'* rather easy to swap in an SC. The pcm can quickly and easily be programmed. Lots of folks own programmers...like myself, Dan etc.

The trans doesn't need to be changed. You could run it the way it is.. or upgrade to the HD by swapping a few easy parts and one axle.

To me the biggest pain of the whole swap is that your fuel lines end up heading in different directions and I'd suggest redoing them. I have done them with Swagelok connectors to convert the hardline to AN and then run AN to the fuel rails. Very nice and clean install...never going to leak or kink. Cost to do the fuel lines is ~$140 in parts. Install is very easy.

That would take a lot more stuff. To my knowledge no one has ever done that swap or even attempted it. Stick to 3.8L and we have all your knowledge that you'll need. Go to the Northstar and ....I'm not sure we can do much to help based on the lack of prior folks doing the swap.

Yeah I didn't see any 3.8 L67'* but then I smacked myself in the forehead and looked in the grand prix section. Also since it'* for my wife and a family car I don't want any crazy hack jobs like we used to do in high school to put huge engines in cars they didn't belong in.

What about an L32 I've found a couple of deals on those.

Call them and talk to Erik. Make sure the transmission will work in your car. There were a few changes in the GP that were slightly different than the Bonneville. And whatever you do.. ENSURE THE TRANSMISSION HAS THE WEBBING WITH 3 BOLT HOLES ON THE BACK.

Some/most W body (GP/Regal/Monte etc) don't have the proper bolt holes on the casing because they don't have a rear trans mount.


The Bonneville and H bodies always had a rear trans mount. This requires more support and 3 bolt holes.


Without the extra two bolt holes, things break. Erik will know exactly what you are talking about when you call.

I just called him. Unfortulately there'* not a place around here that can reprogram a PCM that I can find so it sounds like I'll just be going with a normal L36 since they don't have any transmissions that will work in a Bonne.
