Use always "econ"., Since you need to use it the whole time. Use that "auto" thing when you are trying to defog your windows.

econ does not turn on the ac when working. it is essentally for exactly what it stands for "economy" purposes. So in the summer and if you have ac on and awitch it tyo econ mode, it would just be like a vent mode on other manual climate control cars.
