My chip did change the shifting as well and made it firmer (yeah! my chip does something cool actually!!! lol), but I still find that if your next to someone going along at 20mph and you shift into 1st the car will take off like a bat outta hell compared to just D. However from a dead stop D is your best bet. At 50-65mph I'll shift into 2nd when messing around with someone I know from there area.

Jetta...

I raced my girlfreinds 2001 Jetta TDI. Had her beat in first gear. By the time I was doing 70 her car was to far back to even catch up when I governed.

I just left it in D as I was at a light. I like the tip about throwing it down into 2nd, I'll have to try that once, thanx guys (I know it was just a jetta but I guess a win is a win)
