Default Hydramatic transmission identification

Hi all It is more than obvious that i'm new to this forum. A couple of days ago while a friend of mine was cleaning his garage and he found an Automatic transmission 5L40E which his father left long time ago. It seems to be new but both of us have the problem with the identification. We have looked everywhere in the web but couldn't find what all numbers printed on the transmission mean. So first we have a tag plate - We also have a number - Z10205CH17 on the front part of the transmission. And another one at the back - GM 9602268. So far we found information that this transmission is suitable for some models of BMW, Caddilac, Land Rover. Can anyone tell me for what exact car model this transmission is suitable for? I really appreciate your time and effort!!! Pictures of the transmission you can see here - http://s1214.photobucket.com/albums/...0Transmission/

OK, I sent a PM to our GM customer service rep. Give it some time and there should be a answer.

@ Danthurs - i really appreciate it! Of course i can wait. Hopefully the GM customer service rep. will reveal the mystery.

@ sseidriver97 - thank you man If the transmission is 5L40E here - http://www.scribd.com/doc/24266937/H...-4l40-e-5l40-e i found the same info like yours.

I've posted my question in other forums also. So far i have some answers but nobody is sure 100% sure for what car model is this transmission. I think the exact answer is hidden in the tag plate.

Thanks again!!!

Give Michelle a chance to log in. She should be able to look it up and hopefully find what you need.

According to my resources the 5L40E transmission was used with the 2.8L and 3.8L V6 engines available in such vehicles as the 2005 Cadillac CTS, STS and SRX.

I'm not sure if my transmission is 5L40E. I was just looking pictures in the web and comparing with mine. That is how i decided it is 5L40E. Now is getting confusing because the guy from this thread - http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...4#post21164694 told me the transmission is for BMW X5. So far i also wrote to - http://www.automatikgetriebeprofi.de/ and they also told me it is for X5. But now you give me the opposite information

@ Caron - since you work in GM is their a way to find an email of GM Strasbourg, France? They produced this transmission so may be they will help. So far i couldn't find any contacts.

Did some more looking and found the BMW 5L40E It looks very close but it'* not the same. The case looks the same, but the tail housing is different. This is 2000-2006

Found it also fits a Cadillac 2003-2007

Because my technical English is not good at all i will try to explain it with with a few words. As far as i know the front and the back part of the transmission can be changed. It depends if it will be for rear drive or 4 wheel drive. The front part can be changed for the different engines. So based on the information i have now and thanks to you - the transmission is 5L40E for BMW X5. I really appreciate your help, time and effort!!! It means a lot to me when somebody from the other part of the world has such big desire to help. So now when the problem is solved if it'* necessary the administrator can delete the thread.
