Default Looks can be deceiving!
My 96 SSEi needed a left CV joint/axle. I said "no problem" and pulled it out of the 98 SSEi I have. For some reason, GM thinks it'* funny to change the tranny splines from 34 teeth to 35 teeth somewhere along the line. I grunted with it for 30 minutes before I decided to count the teeth. Why would they do that? Was there a problem in 96?

Isn't the 96 a 4T60E-HD? I know the 98 is a 4T65E-HD. If the 96 is the 60, that would explain it. Two different transmissions.

Aah, I see. Thought they used the same ones. You'd think they could keep the same spline number!
