Mine look darker. The way I did it was I just took a can and misted over it about twice to achieve the black but also brightness of the illuminated lights. There isn't any red coming through during the day, unless I apply the breaks.

in indiana, its legal as long as the reflectors work during the day you can see from X amount of feet and its obvious what you are doing at just a glance for reaction time. i went on the safe side and put 30% gila cling on autozone window tint. if it doesnt pass inspection i can just peel it off and cut more. no ticket because you fix it on site, and no revisit to the inspection place.
here are some pics of mine. id say if its much darker it may be easier to get a junkyard set. with the 30% they are just seethrough during the day in the one with my door open those are my flashers, reverse lights and breaks all caught with the slow shutter of my blackberry. its about 5pm with the sun facing them.
only before pic i have. was working on the lock
nighttime under the streetlight, off.
night time with flash to simulate headlights
night time just running lights
hope this helps. we have pretty restrictive inspections here due to all the steel mills, and i passed.
