Switch to Synthetic?
Greetings everyone!
I just purchased my first Bonneville, and not knowing it'* history, would it be suggested to start running full or semi-synthetic? That'* all I used in my 94 Lumina (3.1L) and never had a problem with it, in fact, I put 90k miles on that in 2 years and not once had a single problem motor-related.
Also, I know with the 3800 supercharged it'* suggested to run premium fuel through it'* veins, but what about the non-supercharged motor? Will it make that much of a difference in performance and gas mileage? (Not that the fuel gauge works anyways...I have a sneaking suspicion I need a new fuel level sensor or sending unit).
Thanks for your input!
Chris

Syhthetic is fine, just don't use a Fram oil filter to go along with it Many people switch to it regardless of how many miles are on the car.
Use regular gas. You'll see no benefit to using premium.

IMO, if you dont want to go with a synthetic (which I would say go for it) then I would run mobil one clean 5000. which is still a dino oil.
run 87 for sure, you will likely notice a drop in mpg and performance with premium

FRAM has a tendency to fall apart, that'* all. No one'* saying you can't use one, just that it is advised not to use one. The same as is recommended not to ever use Bosch spark plugs in our cars, however a lot of people swear by them...
Until they go out 1 month later

Use a good sythetic.....All I can say.
As for filters, Delco'* are good, Purolators, WIX, Amsoil Nanofilters, they're all good.
Pretty much anything but a Fram.....But the above filters are gonna get recomended the most here.

from what i understand and have been told by amsoil reps, is that higher mileage engines can be switched over to full synthetic oil if it is NOT burning or leaking oil. synthetic is "molecularly" smaller than conventional (says the reps). therefore will cause a leaking and or burning engine to burn and leak worse than it did before.
but as far as semi synthetics go, its rare to get more than 20% syn in that blend. and paying for 80% conventional at a semi-syn price, just aint my cup of tea.
imop ur better off mixing 50/50 of the same brand, same viscoscity syn and conv. oil
and the whole fram horror stories, can i see some pics. does anyone have any pics of what they do. ive been using fram (not exclusively)eversince ive been driving. and never had one fall apart. not sure what thats all about. i heard that back in the day, like 15 years ago, fram used some foam in there oil filters that pretty much desinegrated. but i always thought that was some sort of myth. and im sorry, but how cansomeone cut down fram and then back purolator. powerflo/ purolator are crap. cheap. bottom of the barrel.

I believe the issue with Frams is the cardboard end caps failing.
As far as cars leaking or burning oil, while it'* true to some extent, keep in mind that it'* normal for our cars in a perfectly healthy state to consume at least a 1/2 quart between changes.
Don't be afraid to switch to synthetic. Save yourself the hassle of trying to mix stuff yourself too. We haven't seen a single issue on this forum by someone switching to synthetic motor oil - someone please correct me if I'm wrong though.
