Default Auto Xray EZ Scan 6000 capsule review

Got my AutoXray EZ Scan 6000 a week ago, and have had a chance to work with it awhile. Here’* my capsule review:

THE GOOD:
• Scanner is easy to use, with good intuitive menus.
• Printed manual is actually quite good (though somewhat deceptive, see below)
• Scans all the codes I could want, plus about 30 generic/GM-specific operational items; also freeze-frames and data capture.
• Package included cables to hook up to OBD-II, and many OBD-I cars (like my ’93 Dodge).
• Also included PC software and USB hookup cable.
• Price was under $350 delivered, even bundled with engine compression tester from an EBAY retailer--there is also a $50 mfgr’* rebate.

THE BAD:
• PC software is atrocious; I have to reinstall the software and drivers every time I hook up to PC; this is with the newest downloaded updates, and has been confirmed on 4 different PC’* using three different OS (Windows 98, 2000, and XP).

THE UGLY:
• The company’* website and the product’* manual deceptively suggest that a $50 downloadable upgrade will allow additional GM-enhanced codes and operational data to be read (cool stuff like tranny temps and shift times, etc.); this is completely false.
• Customer service sux; took me three days of leaving unreturned phone calls to tech service before getting a surly individual who laughed at me when I asked about the “vaporware” $50 upgrade package above, then said, “you should’ve bought a Tech 2.”

Ultimately, for the price I paid I’m happy with what the tool will do for me…though not with the support. I expected it to be able to give me more data, and I do feel deceived by the company regarding it’* true capabilities.

Hmm... my dads works just fine far as the software. You might need Some updates on the PCs or you might have a Bad CD

Can you share why, specifically, the $50 upgrade is misleading? What do you get with the upgrade? What were you thinking you would get?

Maybe it will read yours because you're OBD-I ?
It doesn't read any tranny info whatsoever on either my '98 or '04 LeSabres.

Check this link for indication of the existence of a GM OBD-II enhanced upgrade:
http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=117

Start at page 59 of the .pdf in this link for a listing of enhanced operational items one might expect from said upgrade:
http://www.autoxray.com/publish/2006...english_94.pdf

I do read SOME of the things on that list, but not many (maybe 8 or 10 of them). Granted, the manual does not PROMISE that you will get ALL of these items with the "upgrade"; however, I feel deceived because:

1) THERE IS NO GM OBD-II ENHANCED UPGRADE. The advertised existence of such an upgrade led me to believe, before purchase, that for 50 bucks more, I could read more stuff. The tech told me "it'* already enhanced, right out of the box...there is no additional upgrade." Sounds good, but then when I asked about the tranny temps, shift times etc., that'* when he laughed and said "guess you shoulda bought a Tech 2 if you want that info".
2) If the manufacturer SPECIFICALLY KNOWS you can't read the vast majority of the listed operational items on your OBD-II GM with their machine, and that, in fact, you need a Tech 2 to do so, why don't they just state that, rather than be intentionally misleading?

Does yours read tranny temps and shift times on your '99 Bonnie?
Did you ever get the "enhanced GM OBD-II upgrade"?

Did I just get a service guy who decided to jerk me around?

The software thing is really not that big a deal for me, because it only takes about 2 minutes, and my data files stay OK.

I'd like to see more posts about experiences with the AutoXray on a 96+ GM OBD-II...
