sounds like your brother is full of crap, and you should know better than to believe youtube.
i had a 02 i bought new base 2.0 5spd and it always got 31-32 until i bought a k&n drop in and removed the silencer in the fender then it got a couple more. i am usually able to get one or two more than the rated mpg, 38-40 would be almost 25% over the factory rating

I have mixed feelings on this subject. While driving a bigger car does make a person feel safer, they will not get the fuel economy of a smaller car with a manual transmission that'* comparing it to a full size car with overdrive. Most of today'* cars don't have the overdrive gear. With the smart car I saw a video on YouTube of the crash testing of this car. I thought it was amazing how it hit a brick wall and just bounced like a ball. The dummy'* on the inside actually faired out well.

well i like your answer better but thats what i was thinking too, the whole reason my cousin was only in the hospital a couple hrs is the car crumple up and took all the force, the smart is a full roll cage with no room for crumpling and all that deceleration force is transferred to the occupants

From one Mod to another, do I have permission to insert the sound where the ball hits a steel pole and it goes TWANG? ( I am not sure if that is acceptable or not)

My reply was not meant to be taken seriously..it was joke or an attempt to make u laugh!!
Anyways back on topic...
Years ago I always wondered if you compared the older style cars lets say 50'* cars in crash tests to the modern cars, it was interesting alone to find out that with all of the modern seat belts and air bags crumple zones, how much safer our cars are today!
I know there is a You tube video that show some very interesting results and comparisons.

the old cars were meant to be strong, so its the same effect of the smart if your locked in you get the force applied to the people. if no seat belts then you would hit the windsheild
