Default Is this OBD 1, 1.5, or 2 and what scanner do I need?

We have 2 1994 Buick Regals, both with a 3.8. They both have the same "12" pin ALDL connector with only 4 terminals connected to them.
Here is what that ALDL connector looks like. From what I have been reading, OBD 1 was 12 pin and OBD 2 is16 pin.
Most of the info I have come across pertains to 1995 GMs and talk about a 16 pin connector being the OBD 1.5...
I am guessing I have a OBD 1.5 with a 12 pin connector? What code reader do I need to find?

You have the OBD 1.0 system. No scanner is needed. You can use the paperclip method to pull codes.

You have the OBD 1.5 system. It spits out OBD 2 type codes, and seems to have about the OBD 2 level of information, but communicates using OBD 1 protocols, using the GM ALDL 12 pin connector.

Most scanners that claim they can read OBD 1 and 2 may be worth looking more closely at, but you will want to ensure it specifically lists itself as being compatible with '94-'95 GM 3800'*.

I use an Actron CP9145 for mine, using the Actron CP9127 cable kit.

This system WILL NOT flash codes, so don't go fishing around with a paper clip like you could on traditional OBD 1. The 'scanners' or 'code readers' that cause the computer to flash codes out using the SES light also will not work on this generation. The Actron scanner can also trigger this mode (called "Field Test mode"), and my '94 Regal literally does nothing when commanded, where as it would cause the '93 PA and '90 Olds 88 to start flashing codes as expected.

Let me post a bit more here...
Here is a ALDL from a 1992 Buick Regal with a 3.8 series 1 engine that we are positive is OBD1 and can be jumped with a paper clip between terminal A and B to flash codes.

''And here (so they are side by side) is the ALDL connector for the 1994 which is also a Buick Regal 3.8 series 1 engine
Notice the difference in the placement of the terminals. There is no B terminal

Another thing to note is that the 92 3.8 does not have the egr tube going into the upper plenum. The 94 3.8 engine does just like the 96 series 2 engines do.
Below is the 94 3.8 in the regal

Correct. '92 did not have EGR. It also had an aluminum upper intake manifold.

Codes cannot be flashed out in the same way they can be on the '92 Regal. As mentioned, it acts exactly like the OBD 1.5 systems shared by other '94-'95 3800s, only it interfaces using the old ALDL connector, rather than the 16 pin OBD 2 port found in the C/H body cars. Codes MUST be scanned using a compatible scanner.

And the folks with Actron CP9145 scanners are pretty proud of them! So is that Actron CP9127 cable kit a bit pricey. I found scanner with several different cable connectors so perhaps that is the way to go.. I read that the Snap On MT2500 can read the codes if you have all the correct cables and cartridges. I think the CP9145 can be connected to my 88 van with the right cable. I do not know how much data it will show. I had a friend connect his MT2500 to my van once and I believe it showed the O2 and a couple of other sensors.
Since it looks like we will be in the Regal business for some time to come, think its best to invest in a scanner!

On a side note, how do you store a car these days so the ethanol gas does rot the tank out and gum everything up ? We bought a Farmall cub tractor this past summer and it wouldn't start. We found the tank and lines coated with a yellowish sticky substance from the old gas. I would assume this can happen in the tank, filter, lines, and injectors of a modern car as well..

This may be worth a look. I haven't had to look in to it in a while though. Usually the ones that can do both OBD 1 and 2 are ones to take a close look at. I have had mine for years though, and caught it at a dirt cheap price in the middle of the night on ebay. Keep searching
