Some times its just got to be done!
Okay, I don't race that often--it is hard on the car. But every once in a while I'll get the itch and have to lay it down the road.
Yesterday after work, on my way to pick up the kids at daycare, i was doing the usual post work stop and go when I came up to a lead position at a red light. Next to me was a blue and silver 1991-1993 Mustang GT drop top. Being a car enthusiast, I notice cars and admire them. This case was no different. I have always liked that style of the fox body Mustang, so it was only natural that when the light changed, I kept up with it.
The problem came when, a mile down the road, my lane was to end and the Mustang driver made it clear that she did not want me to pull in front of her. Tailgating behind her was a significant amount of traffic, so I could not merge in behind her. Every time I eased into the accelerator (trying not to provoke a "race"), she would match my acceleration. This frustrated me as we approached the intersection where my lane would become a right turn only lane, with only a small merging section allowed after the intersection for those turning onto our road.
"If only the light would turn red", I thought to myself. And then it happened. Far enough away from the intersection that we would have to stop, the light turned yellow...I had a chance.
At the light, I waited patiently--not moving my car an inch, while the mustang kept creeping forward in anticipation of the green. I was tempted to do likewise, but we were already past the white "stop here" line. Reading the yellow from the cross traffic light, I prepared my accelerator foot by applying pressure to the break with my left foot (I never break with my left foot during normal driving conditions), while resting my foot over the accelerator with no pressure.
She knew what was going to happen, as she revved her engine in anticipation of the green I saw the cross traffic light go read and gave my car an ample supply of 93. Both the Bonneville and the Mustang broke traction, and I can only imagine what kind of imbesiles the drivers behind us thought we were. She shifted smoothly, and gone were my hopes for an inexperienced driver. Hitting second, I quickly lurched past her car just enough to get by her, but realizing that she was about to shift, I waited until I was comfortably ahead by two lengths before I merged. By this time my right tires were on the paved shoulder, and the paved shoulder was about to end.
After gaining control of the lane, I slowed down to a respectible five over, but she kept riding my bumper until the next light (two miles up), when I approached a yellow and floored it through. She didn't chance it and slammed on her breaks, comming to a stop completely past the white line and almost in the cross traffic.
In my wildest dreams, I never thought that I would actually beat that Mustang. I hoped to entice her into a fast start so that I could get behind her before the other traffic closed in. I can only credit this victory to the probability that her Mustang had higher miles and thus wasn't running optimally. Had I been trying to race her, I wouldn't have broken traction, and I would have taken my tranny out of OD in order to better control the shift points. But alas, the Performance Shift button works fairly well

The Mustangs are always surprised when the 4-door Pontiac family sedan is faster than them. Nice job! We were in kind of that same situation in the GTP once. The other car was a Chevy Caprice Station Wagon, probably with the LT1 V8 in it, but I don't know. Needless to say, we ended up in front of the wagon.

Good job! I was surprised I took a BMW myself...but I figure the kid didn't know how to drive, and I had just started my car a couple minutes before so i was running cool (and I only had Taylor wires then..lol)
I'm waiting for the day I'm next to a 90s Mustang so I can show him up.
