unsure of what to do.
I have a 327 and th400. I want to get the most hp and tourqe out og the setup as i can without braking the bank. I am looking for suggestions.

Before you get ahead of yourself and throw a lot of money at the usual suspect parts such as cam, heads, intake, and headers you need to ask yourself what kind of shape is the bottom end of that 327 in, how many miles on it and such. No point wasting money building hp if the crank and bearings aren't up to it. If the bottom end needs to be rebuilt to handle the hp of the go fast goodies often times you'll be money and time ahead to buy a crate motor. As far as the TH400 it was used in the big block high torque motors, pretty much bullet-proof but it gobbled a lot of hp. Fine for the strip but not so much cruising unless you have a low numerical rear gear. A lot of variables that you need to consider, such as what kind of car this powertrain is going into and what your primary use would be.

I am rebuilding the entire motor from oil pan to air cleaner. I am keeping the heads but changing the valves. The crank is in good shape. Thus my problem on what to do.

As already mentioned, what are you planning to do with it? For instance, there are many cams that setup just for the streets and daily driving. Then there are cams strictly for high RPM 1/4 mile runs. Same thing with carbs. And of course, a lot of this ties into what your TQ stall is and your gear ratios.

My plan is to turn a good 1/4 mile time but also be able to run against the street cars. I am looking for a good middle gound. The gear ratio is 3:73. Unsure about the stall.

I'm more curious as to which type of vehicle the engine is going to be installed in. I mean, if it is going to be in a 2.600 pound early Nova, then the 327 would make adequate power with just a standard rebuild.....however, if the engine is going into a 1972 Monte Carlo which weighs 4,000 pounds well, the 327 ain't going to do much unless you dump alot of money into new cylinder heads and a rotating assembly that can reliably rev to 7,000 rpm'* with a whole lort of compression.
I'd go with an inexpensive big block engine 396, 402 or a 454 and just do a stock rebuild....in a 3500 pound car (or lighter) you will have plenty of power with the 454 and the torque would be a tremendous increase with a basic rebuild than the 327 would have with a performance build.....dollar per dollar wise. Or, go one step further and swap in a 5.3 liter truck engine from something like a 2001 Tahoe.....buying a good used 5.3 engine would actually cost less than reconditioning an old *** 327 block.....and figure $400 to have each of those old heads rebuilt........with a 5.3 truck motor youd be way ahead of the game in the $$$ department.
