Default 3800 H.O.

Some of the Grand prix'* or Grand Am'* (Not the GTP'*)I have seen say 3800 Series II H.O. for High Output... these are L36 right? What makes them High Output and does this mean I have one too?

Yeah I saw it in the RPO code list too, but I don't know what makes it a H.O.

Thanks

The 2.8 V6 in my 1986 Z24 was called High Output. It put out a high of 120 horsepower.

I think it is a marketing gimmick like labeling something "New and Improved" when all that changed was the label and the price.

That last part is the summation of all that I wanted to write out while reading all the posts leading to this. Very well said.

My 1993 Nissan Sentra was labeled XE, and it had about 108 HP peak when brand new. I sold it for $50 and a motherboard. If it were to have had an HO label, I'm sure I would have gotten at least a couple more dollars!

That was HO?? Even Chrysler'* 2.2L turbo made 145 hp.

Sometimes labeling IS nothing more than gimmick. During the 80'*, competition was pretty stiff between all the makers, so it'* no wonder everyone HAD an "HO" version of standard engines...regardless if they really were HO.

Now in the case of the Grand Prix, yes...a 3800 IS an HO motor when compared to the base engine. Same with the 3400 in the Grand Am, as that motor would be an HO compared to the standard offerings of that model. I hope that made sense
