I would have to also believe that the manual shifting doesn't do harm to the transmission just for the fact that my car came with a gated shifter to actually promote manual shifting. It has the 4t65E transmission too. Granted I never shift it manually, but it'* setup so that you can.

yeah i think this whole downshifting thing got blown way out of proportion...

i dont think it was what caused my problems....

i wasnt doing it down every hill in mankato, maybe only did it 20-25 times max over the course of several weeks....and all those times, it wasnt a DRASTIC downshift, just enough...ya know

i quit doing it, but i agree with custom, they let you do it for a reason

i talked to one of the main problem solving guys here, and gave him a quick explination of the problem.

immediately, he suspected debris. which leads to my question...

did all of the parts of that screen come out? i mean, all of it? small fibers (even little cotton fibers, we've found) can make things screwy...

ok, so i finally talked to him, and told him about the problems i am still having...

i didnt wanna tell him before cuz he would feel bad about putting all that work into it and not having it work right...

at first he claimed thats how it should shift...nice and firm...but its not...anyways...

i told him about the solenoid being bad and about doing a tranny flush...he says def not

i told him about maybe some of the screen got left inside...he says def not, the screen was broke into 2 pieces, and he got both pieces...

he told me that he talked to the tranny guy he knows, steve, and steve said there is a lil spring that is right under the pan that sits by the filter. that spring sits in a lil cup, (sorry for being vague) and it controls the 2nd gear shift...

the next step is to see if that spring is broken, and im glad we dont have to drop the tranny again...just the pan...

:hope and pray:

technically, you could remove it if you want, and get a really firm shift. but normally, it wouldn't be associated with a slower shift... a broken spring would seem more like a faster shift. maybe if the piston is sticking... maybe...

So.. let'* say I drop my pan, i'll see these springs.. and if I remove them, I will have a firm[er] shift? Can I access all the springs from there? And if I do take the springs out.. I can put them back in, right?

*clears dust*

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh hum....

as many of u know...we had narrowd it down to that spring...ordered it...it came..

tackled it this weekend...

these are the accumulator valves...
the 1-2 is on the left
and the 2-3 is on the right
labeled on the backside of the part

the spring with orange paint on it is the new one
the old 1-2 spring was FINE!!!!!!

HOWEVER
in the 2-3 valve, there are 2, yes 2 springs, shown different then what this diagram shows....

a larger springs sits on the outside of the smaller spring..and the smaller spring was broken!

i was sure at this point we had it nailed...

my dad had a spare tranny laying around...took the spring out... and replaced the small spring...slapped it together..... took her for a test drive

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

its either the same or worse...
sometimes it doesnt catch at all, and hits the rev limiter...pops in at 5k for 5 times, and then shifts...only done that twice though...

the part that really gets me......is that my dad...certified mechanic..says its just fine...

keep in mind he regularly drives my moms 97 ssei, and that car has AWESOME shifting..but he thinks its to soft...and he likes my "performance" shifting...

folks, its not like that...haha, he just doesnt wana **** with it anymore basically

can we brainstorm more? i know im asking a lot....but i just want it to be normal again..

could it be an electrical problem, timing delay is off?

do i need to get nates used tranny?

Those springs combined with spacers are what I had to change when I firmed up my shifting with the INTENSE shift kit.

You say that it isn't shifting, so I think that you have another problem. Those spings control the firmness of the shift but I think that the rpm it shifts at is controlled by a solenoid and electrical signal from the computer.
