M62 Porting!!
Ive been cruzin club gp and searchin to find ways to cut supercharger temps and i found out that the supercharger porting actually does make a considerable difference in temperature. while looking at www.bluetonguemotorsports.com i noticed that they will port our m62 supercharger for us series 1 guys, and to make it better they have two stages of porting!

Hi, i am interested in having my m62 supercharger off of my 95 ssei ported and i see that you offer a porting and rebuild, could i just have it ported if its a low mileage supercharger? if so can i get a price on just the porting and also a price on the porting and rebuild? Also a general overview of what you do when you port the m62 would be nice also.

Jake, we do offer porting separate from the rebuild service. There are two stages of porting, stage I costs $185 and involves only modification of the outlet side of the supercharger. Stage II involves modification to the inlet side and includes Stage I as well, cost is $325. Porting benefits are greatly improved when used in conjunction with our smaller supercharger pulley.
Rebuilds are $325 when purchased alone and consist of replacing the rear and snout bearings as well as the snout seal with new higher capacity units. Rebuilds performed during porting add $175 to the porting cost.

You're more than welcome to look into it, but from everything Magnusson and Eaton told me personally, there'* little to nothing to gain from it.

Yeah I can't see it doing anything to increase flow, reduce heat, or otherwise. The output size is not the bottlneck in flow, and its the fundamental design of the roots supercharger that causes the heat - also not the output size or shape. Foghorn did it but it was aparently free and a neat experiment (although no testing avail?) but I surely wouldn't pay for it.

there are lots of happy series 2 guys out there with ported superchargers and i ran across this topic at the beginning of the week and thats what sparked my interest on this mod, if it wouldnt do anything or very close to nil, why would zzp offer porting to the supercharger??

Just a guesstimate here but to drop .89 secs like he says it'd have to make another ~70hp. Just a dartboard guesstimate but those times aren't dropped with 20hp thats for sure. Thats more HP than bolting the supercharger on makes in the first place. Insane to think a simple porting of a supercharger thats at 95% efficiency already will gain that much. I'm not saying he'* a liar, but maybe something else accounted for the difference. Think about it though...

Eaton and Magnusson have spent years improving each generation of roots blower. The Helical rotor design was the major breakthrough. They actually have a room (either at Magnusson or Eaton, I forget which) that is filled floor to ceiling with cast-off R&D units. They've optimized these things pretty darn well.
When people gain from porting, it isn't much. And the bulk of heat measured at the outlet of a SC is from the lower intake manifold. Not from the blower itself. The hottest part of an Eaton blower in operation? You may find this surprising, but it'* the inlet.
Want more from your SC? Don't waste your money on porting. Buy an intercooler. Or do both, but it'* really your choice. I think 5hp from porting would be more believable from the conversations I've had with Magnusson and Eaton. If you have the time and money to do as Foghorn did, by all means play around. But if you do, we'd like definitive before and after proof. If we're wrong, we want to know.

You have to realize that there is no possible way to increase the performance of the nearly perfect Eaton blower. Geeze.. Like honestly, Eaton and Magnuson said it them selves!
Obviously this corporation wouldn't keep from us, ways of improving the efficiency of the blowers, while in direct contrast, they don't even let you buy repair parts from them for their blowers. New full blower, or nothing. Would they really tell us how to, or if we even can improve the blower if they won't even let us repair them? This company isnt out just for money i tell ya. :?: I think the issue there is Logic

I've personally spoken with Engineers and Executives of both companies during some research a year or so ago. Very candid conversations. Both companies have scrapped countless blowers in R&D, trying to find ways to improve them. The helical twist of the rotors was the last major breakthru.
Those guys really know their product. I'd love to have a pic of myself sitting on top of the scrap pile.

Porting a blower is not a waste of time or money IMO, its just not the best "bang for your buck." You can probably get a good 5hp or maybe more from the reduced intake temperatures, but its a lot of money you would be spending on it. An intercooler and other mods would be much more beneficial. However, if your trying to get as much out of your setup as possible, like my dad is with his stock cam/m90 GTP, then any little gain you can get is great. But if I were in your position, I would look at coming up with an intercooler core for your car instead. Just my opinion though.
