Default A Supercharger Problem

Today, Easter Sunday (Happy Easter to all observers) I hopped into my 1992 SSEi with 98,xxx miles. As I entered the highway and accelerated to the appropriate speed, a whine, almost a high pitched shrill, started. When I slowed, the sound diminished in intensity. Is this sound indicative of a faulty SC? How does one test the SC? Somebody sells SC'* on ebay, are these adequate for my application? Where else might I find a SC?

I am interested in making some perfor, mance modifications to the vehicle, but I don't know exactly what should be done and where the parts should be purchased. Your assistance is appreciated.

Thanksabunch!!!

The first thing to do is verify the oil level in the nosedrive. We also need to know how much boost your gauge shows in WOT while driving.

Superchargers rarely go BAD, but occasionally need a little maintenance. There are lemons on Ebay. If you find a good looking one, link it here and we'll take a look at it for you.

Let us know about the oil level and boost levels.

How do you check oil level? I don't know what WOT is, please explain. The boost is all over the place. The guage reads from -10 to 10. At idle, it reads approxomately one quarter away from -10. When driving today, it bounced all over. It ran fine until the vehicle reached either third gear or overdrive. Then it peaked into the red, dropped down to zero and all points in between. Is it safe to drive as is? Should I just avoid driving with a heavy load?

I found two rebuilt Superchargers listed on ebay. They appear to be adequate. Any input would be appreciated.

I would be very careful with both of those Ebay units. One of those sellers has only sold one other item on Ebay. He'* either new, or trying to hide something.

The other one is fairly new too. There'* risk involved with both.

WOT is wide open throttle. To check your oil level, remove the threaded plug in the gear housing end (pulley end of the SC, at the fat part where the nosedrive bolts on). Plug is on the top, and the oil should be at the bottom of the threaded hole. Use ONLY GM Supercharger oil.

Based on your description so far, I'd check/change the oil, and check again. Seems too bouncy to me. Might be your Boost Control Solonoid or Wasgate actuator.

I will check and advise. Since those potential sources are not necessarily adequate, do you know of anyone who rebuilds Superchargers (in the event I need one, I like to be prepared). How do you drain the oil? What color should it be? Any odor at all? I did get a funky odor for a brief moment in time (long enough to say what the hell is that smell?), but that subsided. Yes, I know enough not to check it hot. Appreciate your help.

The supercharger oil smells horrid. I have seen where people recommend noseplugs while changing it. The best way I have found to change it is to take the top of a soap dispensor (any type of dispensor like this will work) and stick it in the hole and then squirt it into the bottom of the dispensor. It isn't really fast or anything, but it gets the job done and doesn't really take too long because there isn't much oil in there.

Also, you need to find the source of the whine. It may not be the */C, it may be any one of a number of accessories attached to your drive belt.

Two months ago I had the drive belt replaced. Today, I noticed some fraying on the inside edge of the belt. Perhaps, that is the culprit to the noise? I drove to my sister'* house today, both conservatively and full throttle. Minor noise at times, other times . . . no noise at all. No funky smell either. It was my impression that the supercharger is at fault because the noise coincided with lack of boost at WOT. I have not yet checked oil, will do that tomorrow. Thanks for the technical advice.

Your belt may be misaligned. You have two serpentine belts there... Which one is frayed?
