For several months my car has been stumbling when the torque converter clutch locks up. I changed the plugs and it stopped misfiring as badly as before, but there is still very little power. The car runs just fine until the TCC locks up at 40MPH. At that point, if I try to accelerate or go uphill the engine makes a slight pinging/rattling and basically refuses to put out more power until it downshifts or unlocks the TCC.

Gas filter is 1 year old, coils are within spec, and I cleaned the ICM contacts with no improvement in performance.

I didn't think to check my wires since they are new Taylor wires, less than 6 months old. Then I read another post about checking the resistance. Here are the results:

1 - .347K
2 - 1.14K
3 - OPEN
4 - 2.30K
5 - OPEN
6- 1.63K

I double-checked #3 and #5 half a dozen times, and couldn't get a reading from either of them. Then I removed wires #3 and #5 and the car misfired badly at idle. What the heck is going on here? Plugs #3 and #5 look fine so they must be getting at least some juice. But maybe not enough??

Now I'm pissed because the Taylors are past their 3-month warranty and I should have tried this test months ago I like the blue color but I don't know whether I want to buy Taylors again or just get AC Delco OEM wires.

I didn't want to wait for AC Delco wires to ship so I picked up some "Ultraspark" cheap-o wires at Autozone. These wires have a higher resistance than the Taylors:

1 - 6K
2 - 11.5K
3 - 5.3K
4 - 12K
5 - 6.5K
6 - 12K

Anyway, I put them in my car and... IT STILL MISFIRES! AAAARGH!!!!!!

I have checked the components listed in my original post, plus I checked the TPS and the resistance is linear and within spec throughout its range.

What next? Should I try swapping in a new coil? Check the injectors? Fill the tank with racing fuel? :?:

I got a new AC Delco coil. I swapped it with each of the coils one at a time, and test drove the car each time. No luck, it still misfires!

I think I'm just going to have to live with this for now, unless anyone'* got any brainstorms...

After running the car with bad wires it would be a good idea to replace the plugs or at least inspect and clean them. You could have swapped your coils around before buying a new one to see if the mis moved with the suspect coil?

I did move the coils around before buying the new one but I didn't notice a difference. I'm not sure I would know what to look for - would the misfire be noticeably different when it moves to a different pair of cylinders?

You can use a stethescope or screw driver to the ear to isolate. Does it mis at idle, must have with the 2 bad wires?
